Silky Smooth Microwave Steamed Egg
The Golden Ratio for Perfect Microwave Steamed Egg Every Time
I’ve often ended up with dry or rubbery steamed eggs by just estimating the ingredients. Turns out, there’s a golden ratio for steamed eggs! This time, it’s a guaranteed success. This recipe makes it incredibly easy to achieve a wonderfully soft and moist texture.
Ingredients- 4 large eggs
- 250ml water (equal to egg volume)
- 1/2 Tbsp salted shrimp, finely chopped
- 1/2 tsp salt
- A little chopped green onion
- A pinch of black pepper
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Lightly grease the inside of your microwave-safe heatproof bowl with cooking oil, then wipe it clean with a paper towel. This simple step prevents the steamed egg from sticking to the bowl, ensuring a clean presentation.
Step 2
Crack 4 large eggs into a mixing bowl. Add 250ml of water, maintaining a 1:1 ratio of eggs to water. This precise ratio is key to achieving the perfect texture, so be sure to follow it closely. (Four large eggs typically measure around 200-250ml.)
Step 3
Add 1/2 tablespoon of finely chopped salted shrimp to the egg mixture for a boost of umami. Homemade salted shrimp can vary in saltiness compared to store-bought versions, so tasting and adjusting the seasoning is recommended. Ensure the shrimp is minced finely to blend smoothly.
Step 4
Next, stir in a small amount of finely chopped green onion and a pinch of black pepper. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt for seasoning. I used sea salt for an extra layer of flavor. Feel free to adjust the salt to your personal preference.
Step 5
If you don’t have a dedicated steamer, pour the egg mixture into a microwave-safe bowl. Cover it tightly with plastic wrap, and then poke several small holes in the wrap with a toothpick or fork. This allows steam to escape, preventing the egg from puffing up too much.
Step 6
Now, it’s time to microwave! My microwave is 1100W, and I cooked it for 8 minutes. Cooking times may vary depending on your microwave’s wattage. It’s a good idea to check on it periodically to ensure it’s cooked perfectly. (For a 700W microwave, aim for 10-12 minutes; for 1000W, about 7-9 minutes.)
Step 7
Voila! Your steamed egg is ready – perfectly jiggly, incredibly tender, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. If you don’t have salted shrimp, simply using salt for seasoning works wonderfully. For an added touch of flavor, try adding a small amount of pollack roe. Serve immediately while warm for the best taste.
