Main Ingredients- 1/2 block firm tofu (approx. 150g)
- 1/2 handful all-purpose flour (approx. 30g)
- 1 large egg
- Pinch of salt
- Pinch of black pepper
Dipping Sauce- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 0.5 Tbsp minced garlic
- 1/2 Korean chili pepper (seeds removed and finely chopped)
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 0.5 Tbsp minced garlic
- 1/2 Korean chili pepper (seeds removed and finely chopped)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, crack 1 large egg into a bowl and whisk it well until frothy. Spread about half a handful of all-purpose flour onto a plate. (Tip: The recipe calls for 1 egg and half a handful of flour, but based on experience, using 2 eggs and a full handful of flour provides a more generous coating. However, the original amounts are perfectly sufficient for a delicious result!)
Step 2
Rinse the tofu under running water and gently pat it dry. Cut the tofu into pieces approximately 1cm to 1.5cm thick. Avoid cutting the tofu too thinly, as it may crumble during cooking. Maintaining a moderate thickness is key.
Step 3
Lightly season both sides of the cut tofu with a pinch of salt and black pepper. This step helps to remove any unwanted odors from the tofu and adds a subtle flavor.
Step 4
Coat the seasoned tofu pieces evenly with flour on all sides. A light flour coating helps the egg batter adhere better and contributes to a crispier texture when frying.
Step 5
Dip the floured tofu pieces into the whisked egg mixture, ensuring they are fully coated. (Tip: Using your hands can make the flour and egg mixture clumpy and messy. It’s easier to dip and lift the tofu pieces using a spoon to get a clean egg coating.)
Step 6
Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Carefully place the egg-coated tofu pieces into the hot pan and fry until golden brown and crispy on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. This ensures the tofu is cooked through and has a beautiful golden color.
Step 7
In a small bowl, combine 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp red pepper flakes, 1 Tbsp sesame oil, 0.5 Tbsp minced garlic, and the finely chopped 1/2 Korean chili pepper. Stir well to create the dipping sauce. (Tip: For added crunch, you can mix in some finely chopped green onions. This sauce quantity is suitable for 1-2 servings and pairs wonderfully with the fritters.)
