Easy Homemade Seaweed Rice Balls for Kids: A Simple Recipe
These are super simple seaweed rice balls, perfect for a quick and tasty snack for children. They’re made with minimal effort and are a great way to use up leftover rice. The addition of mayonnaise makes them wonderfully moist and savory, while the crispy seasoned seaweed coating adds a delightful texture that kids absolutely adore.
Main Ingredients- 300g warm cooked rice (about 1.5 bowls)
- 2 Tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- A pinch of salt (or a little soy sauce)
- Generous amount of toasted sesame seeds (to taste)
- 2-3 sheets seasoned seaweed (gim)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, place 300g of warm cooked rice into a large bowl. Ensure the rice is not too hot to handle safely; letting it cool slightly before proceeding is recommended.
Step 2
We’ll season the rice now. Start by drizzling in 1 tablespoon of sesame oil for a nutty aroma and flavor.
Step 3
Considering this is a children’s snack, add just a tiny pinch of salt for seasoning. If you prefer to use soy sauce, add only a very small amount. Sprinkle in a generous amount of toasted sesame seeds for extra flavor, adjusting the quantity to your liking.
Step 4
Here’s the secret ingredient for today’s recipe: add 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise! The mayonnaise will lightly coat the rice grains, making them tender and adding a delightful richness that kids love. Use a spatula or your hands to gently mix all the ingredients together, being careful not to mash the rice.
Step 5
Now, shape the rice into small, round balls, perfect for little hands to hold. You can make them bite-sized or slightly larger, depending on your preference. This amount of rice will make approximately 8 rice balls.
Step 6
Next, prepare the seasoned seaweed (gim) that will serve as the coating for your rice balls. Using crispy and flavorful seaweed will make them even more delicious.
Step 7
Place 2-3 sheets of seasoned seaweed into a clean plastic bag and crush them into small pieces with your hands. To avoid a mess, crush the seaweed gently or use a resealable bag for convenience.
Step 8
Add the formed rice balls into the bag with the crushed seaweed. Gently shake the bag to coat the rice balls evenly with the seaweed flakes. Once the rice balls are well-coated, transfer them to a plate. Sprinkle any remaining seaweed flakes on top, and your delicious seaweed rice balls are ready to be enjoyed!
