Effortlessly Make Comforting White Porridge from Leftover Rice!
When your stomach feels upset and you’ve been unwell all day but suddenly feel hungry, making porridge from scratch with raw rice can take too long. I tried making white porridge with leftover rice, and it was quick, simple, and a satisfying meal! It didn’t take much time and was perfect for a light yet filling meal.
Porridge Ingredients- Leftover cooked rice, as much as you want to eat
- Sesame oil, 2-3 tablespoons (adjust according to the amount of rice)
- Water, about 1.5 times the amount of rice
Soy Sauce Dipping Sauce- Soy sauce, 4 tablespoons
- Sesame oil, 1 tablespoon
- Toasted sesame seeds, 2 pinches
- Soy sauce, 4 tablespoons
- Sesame oil, 1 tablespoon
- Toasted sesame seeds, 2 pinches
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Coat the bottom of a pot or earthenware pot with 2-3 tablespoons of sesame oil. Swirl it around to evenly distribute.
Step 2
Take the leftover cooked rice and add it to the pot.
Step 3
Spread the rice out with a spatula or spoon and stir-fry it with the sesame oil. It’s important to coat each grain of rice with sesame oil.
Step 4
Once the rice is evenly coated with sesame oil, pour in the water. Start with about 1.5 times the amount of rice. You can add more water or let it simmer to achieve your desired consistency. Bring it to a boil.
Step 5
As the porridge boils, stir occasionally to prevent it from sticking to the bottom. Avoid stirring too frequently; let the rice grains soften before stirring gently.
Step 6
While the porridge is simmering, let’s prepare the dipping sauce. First, place 4 tablespoons of soy sauce into a small bowl.
Step 7
Add 1 tablespoon of sesame oil to the soy sauce for extra richness.
Step 8
For a more aromatic flavor, gently crush the 2 pinches of toasted sesame seeds between your fingertips before adding them. This releases their nutty aroma and taste.
Step 9
Continue to stir the porridge every so often as it cooks. Let the rice grains break down and the porridge thicken to your preferred consistency. It’s best to simmer over medium-low heat rather than high heat.
Step 10
The porridge is ready when the rice grains have softened completely and it has a creamy texture! Serve warm in a bowl and enjoy with the prepared soy sauce dipping sauce. A delicious white porridge that’s gentle on your stomach!
