  • 2 sheets of kimbap seaweed (nori)
  • 2 frankfurter sausages

Seasoning and Decoration

  • 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil
  • Pinch of salt
  • A few black sesame seeds (for eyes)
  • A little ketchup (for cheeks)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the frankfurter sausages. Cut each sausage in half. Then, pour hot water over the cut sausages and blanch them for about 1 minute. This step helps remove any impurities and ensures a cleaner taste.

Step 1

Step 2

Now, let’s season the rice for the kimbap filling. In a bowl of warm cooked rice (about 1 bowl), add 1/2 Tbsp of sesame oil and a pinch of salt. Mix well to season the rice evenly. Keep in mind that the sausages are salty, so season the rice to avoid it becoming too salty. Tip: Avoid adding sesame seeds directly into the rice mixture, as this can make the kimbap look messy later. It’s best to reserve the black sesame seeds for decorating the eyes separately.

Step 2

Step 3

Place a sheet of kimbap seaweed on a bamboo rolling mat. Spread half of the seasoned rice thinly over the seaweed. Then, shape the remaining rice into a thicker log along one edge of the seaweed, matching the thickness of the sausage. Place the blanched sausage onto this thicker log of rice.

Step 3

Step 4

It’s time to roll the kimbap! Roll the seaweed tightly, just like you would with regular kimbap. Brush a little sesame oil on the outside of the rolled kimbap for a nice sheen and enhanced flavor. Slice the kimbap into bite-sized pieces. To create the smiley face, use black sesame seeds for the eyes and a toothpick dipped in a small amount of ketchup to dot on the rosy cheeks.
