Main Ingredients
  • 1 block Tofu (firm or regular)
  • 1/2 Onion
  • 1/2 stalk Scallions (green onions)
  • 3 Tbsp Cooking oil

Seasoning Ingredients
  • 100ml Water (or broth)
  • 4 Tbsp Soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 1/2 Tbsp Oyster sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp Oligodang (corn syrup or honey)
  • 1 Tbsp Toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 Tbsp Sesame oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, gently rinse the tofu under running water, then thoroughly pat it dry with paper towels. Removing excess moisture prevents oil splattering and helps achieve a better sear.

Step 2

Slice the onion into thick strips. Slice the scallions diagonally to add color and aroma to the dish.

Step 3

Cut the dried tofu into bite-sized pieces, about 1.5 to 2 cm thick. Cutting them too thinly might cause them to break apart, so aim for a moderate thickness.

Step 4

In a bowl, combine the water (or broth), soy sauce, gochugaru, oyster sauce, minced garlic, and oligodang. Mix well to create the delicious braising sauce for the tofu. Feel free to adjust the soy sauce or sweetener to your preference.

Step 5

Heat cooking oil (3 tablespoons) in a pan over medium heat. Place the sliced tofu and pan-fry until golden brown on both sides. A slightly crispy exterior adds a wonderful texture.

Step 6

Once the tofu is golden brown, push it slightly to one side of the pan. Add the sliced onions to the empty space and sauté briefly. Pour the prepared sauce over the tofu and onions.

Step 7

Once the sauce comes to a boil, reduce the heat to medium-low. Add the sliced scallions and simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing the sauce to reduce and coat the tofu. Basting the tofu with the sauce periodically will enhance the flavor.

Step 8

If the sauce becomes too thick during simmering, add a little more water. If you prefer a saucier dish, you can increase the amount of water slightly.

Step 9

Finally, cover the pan with a lid and simmer for another minute on low heat. This step allows the flavors to fully penetrate the tofu.

Step 10

Just before turning off the heat, drizzle in the toasted sesame seeds and sesame oil. This adds a rich, nutty aroma and enhances the overall flavor profile.

Step 11

Serve the perfectly braised tofu in a dish, and enjoy a delicious meal that pairs wonderfully with rice! Savor the delightful combination of soft tofu and savory sauce.
