Soft Tofu and Tuna Patties: Super Simple & Nutritious Side Dish
Recipe for Making Tofu and Tuna Patties
A simple and nutritious side dish recipe using tofu and tuna. These patties are wonderfully soft and flavorful, perfect for lunchboxes or as a healthy snack.
Main Ingredients- 1 can (150g) Tuna
- 1 block (approx. 300g) Firm Tofu
- 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 2 Tbsp Finely Chopped Carrot
- 2 Tbsp Finely Chopped Onion
- Pinch of Black Pepper
- Approx. 1/2 tsp Salt (adjust to taste)
- 1 Tbsp All-purpose Flour or Pancake Mix
- 1 Egg
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, it’s crucial to thoroughly drain the tofu. Wrap the block of tofu in a cheesecloth or paper towels and press firmly to squeeze out as much water as possible. This prevents the mixture from becoming too wet. Place the mashed tofu in a bowl. Drain the oil completely from the 1 can (150g) of tuna and add it to the bowl with the mashed tofu.
Step 2
Now, let’s make the patty mixture. To the bowl with the mashed tofu and drained tuna, add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic, 2 tablespoons of finely chopped carrot, and 2 tablespoons of finely chopped onion. Sprinkle in a pinch of black pepper and add about 1/2 teaspoon of salt for seasoning. (Adjust salt according to the tuna’s saltiness.) Add 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour or pancake mix, and crack in 1 egg. Mix and knead everything thoroughly with your hands until well combined and it forms a cohesive mass. *Tip: For a hint of spiciness, you can finely chop half a Korean chili pepper (cheongyang gochu) and add it now for a more adult-friendly flavor.
Step 3
It’s time to shape the well-kneaded mixture into patties. Take spoonfuls of the mixture and gently flatten them into round shapes with your palms. You can make them bite-sized for children’s snacks or slightly larger for a more substantial side dish. The size is entirely up to your preference!
Step 4
Now, let’s start cooking. Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat with a generous amount of cooking oil. Be careful not to use high heat, as the outside might burn before the inside is cooked through. Place the shaped patties in the preheated pan, leaving some space between them so they don’t stick together. Cook them slowly. *Tip: Avoid flipping the patties immediately after placing them in the pan. Wait until one side is firm and golden brown before flipping to ensure they maintain their shape.
Step 5
Once the bottom side is nicely golden brown, carefully flip the patties and cook the other side until it’s also golden brown. Continue cooking over controlled heat, ensuring all sides are evenly cooked. These tofu and tuna patties will be wonderfully soft on the inside with a slightly crisp exterior. They are delicious served hot and also make a great addition to packed lunches once cooled.
