Main Ingredients

  • 1 block Tofu (approx. 300g)
  • 1 Shiitake mushroom
  • 1/4 Onion (small)
  • 1/4 Carrot (small)
  • 1/2 Scallion (white part mainly)
  • 1 Egg
  • 6 Tbsp Breadcrumbs
  • 3.5 Tbsp Starch (cornstarch or potato starch)
  • Pinch of salt (approx. 1/2 tsp)
  • Pinch of black pepper

Delicious Sauce Ingredients

  • 1/4 Onion (small)
  • 1 Tbsp Minced garlic
  • 4 Tbsp Steak sauce
  • 2 Tbsp Ketchup
  • 2 Tbsp Oyster sauce
  • 1/2 Paper cup Water (approx. 100ml)
  • Pinch of black pepper

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

It’s crucial to remove excess water from the tofu. Wrap the tofu in a clean cloth (or several layers of paper towels) and press firmly with your hands to squeeze out as much water as possible. Then, mash the tofu until smooth and lump-free.

Step 1

Step 2

Remove the stems from the shiitake mushrooms. Finely mince the onion, carrot, and shiitake mushrooms. Mincing the ingredients finely will help them incorporate well into the tofu mixture and create a smoother texture.

Step 2

Step 3

In a large bowl, combine the drained and mashed tofu with the minced onion, carrot, and shiitake mushrooms. Add 1 egg, 6 Tbsp breadcrumbs, 3.5 Tbsp starch, a pinch of salt, and a pinch of pepper. Mix everything thoroughly to form a cohesive mixture.

Step 3

Step 4

Knead the mixture in the bowl for about 5 minutes. This process will make the mixture more elastic and firm, ensuring the steaks hold their shape when cooked. Take portions of the mixture, slightly larger than bite-sized, and shape them into flat, round steak patties.

Step 4

Step 5

Heat a pan over medium-low heat and add a generous amount of cooking oil. Place the shaped tofu patties in the hot pan. Cook until golden brown on one side, then flip and cook the other side until similarly golden brown. This should take about 5-7 minutes per side to ensure they are cooked through.

Step 5

Step 6

Making the sauce: While the steaks are cooking, let’s prepare the sauce. In a separate pan, heat a little oil over medium-low heat. Add the minced garlic and thinly sliced onion, and sauté until fragrant. Cook until the onions become translucent.

Step 6

Step 7

Once the onions are translucent, add all the sauce ingredients: 4 Tbsp steak sauce, 2 Tbsp ketchup, 2 Tbsp oyster sauce, 1/2 paper cup (approx. 100ml) of water, and a pinch of black pepper. Stir well to combine. Let the sauce simmer and thicken until it reaches your desired consistency. Your delicious sauce is ready!

Step 7

Step 8

Arrange the beautifully cooked tofu steaks on a plate. Generously pour the warm sauce you just made over the steaks. Your delicious Tofu Steak is complete! For an extra touch, you can garnish with parsley flakes if desired.
