Easy Spam Donburi Rice Bowl with Irresistible Salty-Sweet Flavor
A simple yet delicious rice bowl recipe using just Spam and eggs. This dish offers a delightful balance of savory Spam and a sweet, salty sauce that’s perfect for a quick and satisfying meal.
Ingredients- 1 bowl of steamed rice
- 2 large eggs
- A little thinly sliced green onion (optional)
- 1/2 purple onion, thinly sliced
- 71g Spam or ham (approx. 1/2 can)
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 1 paper cup (200ml) water
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare all your ingredients before you begin cooking. Having everything ready will make the cooking process smooth and enjoyable.
Step 2
In a small bowl, crack the 2 eggs and add a pinch of salt. Whisk them until well combined and smooth. Thinly slice the purple onion. Slice the Spam into bite-sized pieces (about 1cm thick). If you prefer less salt, you can briefly blanch the Spam slices in boiling water for about 1 minute, then drain them. Lightly oil a frying pan and cook the Spam slices until golden brown on both sides. You can place the cooked Spam on paper towels to absorb any excess oil.
Step 3
Add a little cooking oil to the same pan and sauté the sliced purple onion until it becomes translucent and fragrant. Once the onions are softened, add the 3 Tbsp soy sauce and 2 Tbsp sugar. Stir and cook until the sauce thickens slightly. If you’re using green onions, add them now and sauté for another minute. (The green onion is optional). The ratio of soy sauce to sugar is 3:2. This proportion creates a sauce that is perfectly savory and sweet when mixed with rice. If you prefer a milder flavor, feel free to reduce the amount of soy sauce and sugar.
Step 4
Pour 1 paper cup (200ml) of water into the pan with the sautéed onions and sauce. Stir well to combine. Add the cooked Spam slices to the sauce and let it simmer gently for a minute or two, allowing the Spam to absorb the flavors. Be careful not to break the Spam pieces. Now, gently pour the whisked eggs over the Spam and onion mixture. Cook over low heat until the eggs are set but still slightly soft and moist in the center. This will give a creamy texture. Spoon the warm steamed rice into a serving bowl. Carefully place the cooked Spam and egg mixture on top of the rice to complete your Spam Donburi. (We add the Spam later in the cooking process to prevent it from becoming too salty from the soy sauce and sugar mixture.)
Step 5
This Spam Donburi rice bowl is a truly satisfying one-dish meal! The delightful salty-sweet flavor pairs wonderfully with the rice, creating a harmonious taste experience. It’s a simple yet incredibly delicious dish that’s perfect for family meals, especially for kids. Enjoy your homemade Donburi!
