Spam Kimchi Fried Rice: Elevated Flavor Recipe
How to Make Kimchi Fried Rice (Spam Kimchi Fried Rice)
This Spam Kimchi Fried Rice recipe is incredibly simple to make but delivers a flavor profile that’s perfectly balanced and deeply satisfying. While I usually use soy sauce and oyster sauce for fried rice, adding a touch of ‘Dasida’ (a Korean seasoning powder) this time made it exceptionally delicious. All measurements are based on a standard Korean rice spoon (큰술).
Spam Kimchi Fried Rice Ingredients- 61g Kimchi (finely chopped)
- 65g Spam (cut into approx. 5mm thick cubes)
- 210g Cooked Rice (about 1.5 bowls)
- 0.7 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili powder)
- 1 Tbsp Oligodang (corn syrup or honey for sweetness)
- 0.3 Tbsp Dasida (Korean MSG-based seasoning powder)
- 2 Tbsp Grapeseed Oil
- 1 Egg
- A pinch of Toasted Sesame Seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the Spam by cutting it into approximately 5mm thick cubes. Finely chop the kimchi with scissors or a knife. If your kimchi is very sour, you can add a tiny pinch of sugar to balance the flavor.
Step 2
Heat a frying pan over medium heat. Add the cut Spam and chopped kimchi to the pan. Stir-fry them lightly, allowing the Spam to render some of its fat.
Step 3
Now it’s time to add all the seasonings. Add 0.7 Tbsp of gochugaru, 1 Tbsp of oligodang, 2 Tbsp of grapeseed oil, and 0.3 Tbsp of Dasida for that extra umami boost.
Step 4
Reduce the heat to medium-low. Stir-fry the ingredients until the gochugaru turns a vibrant red color, indicating that the flavors have melded together. This should take about 2-3 minutes. Be careful not to burn the ingredients.
Step 5
Once the mixture is well-fried, add the 210g of cooked rice. Use the back of your spoon or a spatula held upright to break up any clumps of rice and gently toss it with the kimchi and Spam mixture. Ensure every grain of rice is coated with the flavorful sauce.
Step 6
After thoroughly mixing the rice with the other ingredients, taste the fried rice. Adjust the seasoning if necessary. If it needs more savory depth, add a tiny bit more Dasida. Keep in mind that the saltiness of the kimchi can vary, so tasting is crucial.
Step 7
Once the seasoning is perfect, turn off the heat. Sprinkle a generous amount of toasted sesame seeds over the fried rice for added aroma and nutty flavor.
Step 8
Transfer the finished Spam Kimchi Fried Rice to a serving plate. Present it attractively – a steaming plate of fried rice is always a welcome sight.
Step 9
To complete the dish, fry an egg to your preference (sunny-side up, over easy, or well-done). Place the freshly fried egg on top of the hot kimchi fried rice. This Spam Kimchi Fried Rice is now perfectly ready to be enjoyed!
