Ingredients
  • 1 can Spam (200g)
  • 2 sheets of dried seaweed for kimbap

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Cut the kimbap seaweed sheets lengthwise into 4 equal strips. This size will be perfect for wrapping each musubi.

Step 2

Slice the Spam into approximately 1cm thick pieces, suitable for easy eating. Ensure they aren’t too thick for the children.

Step 3

Place the sliced Spam onto a preheated pan. Cook over medium heat.

Step 4

Fry the Spam until it’s golden brown and slightly crispy on both sides. You can gently dab away excess oil with a paper towel for a cleaner finish. The fried Spam alone is delicious!

Step 5

Let’s make the delicious teriyaki sauce that will define the flavor of your Spam Musubi. In a small bowl, combine 1/2 tsp sugar, 1/2 Tbsp soy sauce, 1/2 Tbsp oyster sauce, 1 Tbsp mirin (rice wine), a pinch of ginger powder, and 1 Tbsp water. Mix well.

Step 6

Pour the prepared teriyaki sauce evenly over the golden-brown fried Spam.

Step 7

Simmer over medium-low heat until the teriyaki sauce is absorbed into the Spam and thickens. Stir with a spatula to prevent burning, creating a glossy finish. This makes delicious teriyaki-glazed Spam.

Step 8

Transfer the cooked teriyaki Spam to a plate and let it cool slightly.

Step 9

Clean an empty Spam can. Line the inside with plastic wrap, ensuring there’s enough to fold over later. We’ll use the Spam can as a mold for the musubi.

Step 10

Season the warm cooked rice with 1 Tbsp sesame oil, a pinch of salt, and a pinch of pepper. Gently mix. Press the seasoned rice evenly into the plastic-wrapped Spam can mold. Make sure the rice isn’t too wet, or it will be difficult to shape.

Step 11

Place the appetizing teriyaki-glazed Spam slices on top of the rice layer.

Step 12

Using the plastic wrap, carefully lift the rice and Spam out of the can. Take one strip of the prepared kimbap seaweed. Wrap it around the Spam and rice, ensuring the Spam is in the center. Then, tightly wrap the entire thing with the plastic wrap to shape it. Gently press the musubi through the plastic wrap to help the seaweed adhere to the rice. Wrapping it tightly with plastic ensures it holds its shape beautifully.

Step 13

Voila! Your adorable Spam Musubi, loved by kids, is ready! Each bite offers a delightful combination of savory-sweet Spam, rice, and seaweed.
