Main Ingredients

  • 500g Kimchi (well-fermented sour kimchi)
  • 3 sheets Fish Cake (cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1/2 Onion (sliced)
  • 1 Tbsp Cooking Oil
  • 450ml Water
  • 1/2 Leek (sliced diagonally)

Seasoning Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Fish Sauce (or Soy Sauce)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare 500g of kimchi. Use scissors or a knife to cut the kimchi into bite-sized pieces. If your kimchi is very sour, you can adjust the amount of sugar slightly.

Step 1

Step 2

Cut the 3 sheets of fish cake into pieces similar in size to the kimchi. Slice the 1/2 onion into thin strips. Slice the 1/2 leek diagonally.

Step 2

Step 3

Now, take a pot and heat 1 tablespoon of cooking oil over medium-high heat. Add the chopped kimchi to the pot.

Step 3

Step 4

Stir and sauté the kimchi with the oil for about 2-3 minutes, ensuring it’s well coated. Sautéing the kimchi like this mellows its sourness and brings out its savory flavor.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the kimchi is softened from sautéing, add the cut fish cakes and sliced onion. Stir them in and then pour in 450ml of water.

Step 5

Step 6

Add 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1 tablespoon of fish sauce to season. (If you don’t have fish sauce, you can substitute with soy sauce.) Bring the stew to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium once it starts bubbling.

Step 6

Step 7

Simmer gently over medium heat for about 10 minutes, allowing the kimchi, fish cakes, and seasonings to meld together beautifully. In the final step, add the diagonally sliced leeks and cook for another minute or so. Your delicious Fish Cake Kimchi Stew is ready! Enjoy it piping hot with a bowl of rice.
