Main Ingredients- 1 block Firm Tofu (approx. 300g, pan-frying type recommended)
- 1/2 Onion
- 1/2 Green Onion
- 1 Korean Chili Pepper (adjust to taste)
- A little cooking oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the tofu and vegetables. Slice one block of tofu into thick pieces, about 1.5cm to 2cm thick. Cutting it too thin might cause it to break apart, so a slightly thicker slice is better. Thinly slice the onion. Cut the green onion diagonally into bite-sized pieces. Finely chop the Korean chili pepper for a spicy kick, and adjust the amount to your preference. Feel free to add other vegetables like red chili peppers or perilla leaves if you like. Using firm tofu (pan-frying type) helps prevent it from breaking apart during cooking and adds a delicious texture. You can conveniently buy this type at most supermarkets.
Step 2
Now, let’s make the delicious sauce! In a bowl, combine 4 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp minced garlic, 4 tsp gochugaru, 2 tsp sugar, 3 Tbsp gochujang, and 1 Tbsp sesame oil. Add 100ml of water and mix well to create the sauce base. Stir in the sliced onion and chopped Korean chili pepper. This mixture will become your savory and slightly sweet sauce for the Tofu Duruchigi. The addition of onion will make the sauce smoother and enhance its flavor.
Step 3
Finally, let’s cook the tofu to perfection! Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Place the sliced tofu and pan-fry until golden brown on both sides. Once the tofu is lightly browned, pour the prepared sauce evenly over the tofu. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 2 minutes, allowing the tofu to absorb the flavors of the sauce. Be careful not to overcook, as the tofu can become dry. Finish by sprinkling toasted sesame seeds on top. Your spicy and flavorful Sumine Tofu Duruchigi is now ready! It’s delicious served over warm rice as a simple meal or enjoyed as a tasty side dish.
