Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Welcome! Today, we’re going to make a delicious spicy braised tofu dish. It’s a fantastic side dish for rice, so let’s get started!

Step 2

First, gently press the tofu with paper towels to remove excess water. This helps prevent oil splattering when frying and ensures a crispier exterior. Cut the tofu into thick, rectangular pieces about 1.5 to 2 cm thick. Heat 2 tablespoons of perilla oil in a pan over medium heat. Once hot, carefully place the tofu pieces in the pan and fry them until golden brown on all sides, almost like deep-frying. A slightly crispy exterior makes it even more delicious.

Step 3

Wash and finely chop the green onions. These will be used as a garnish at the end, adding a beautiful color and fresh aroma.

Step 4

While the tofu is frying, you can prepare the spicy braising sauce to save time. In a small bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of gochujang, 1 tablespoon of gochugaru, 1 teaspoon of plum extract, 1 teaspoon of corn syrup, and a pinch of black pepper. Mix everything well until smooth.

Step 5

Arrange the nicely fried tofu pieces evenly in the pan. Generously spoon the prepared spicy sauce over the tofu. To allow the sauce to fully penetrate the tofu, reduce the heat to low, cover the pan with a lid, and let it simmer gently for about 5-7 minutes. If the sauce thickens too much during simmering, you can add 1-2 tablespoons of water. It’s important to let the tofu absorb the sauce well as it braises.

Step 6

Voila! Your spicy and flavorful braised tofu is ready. It’s absolutely delicious served over a bowl of hot steamed rice!

Step 7

Thanks to the perfect blend of gochujang and gochugaru, this dish offers a unique charm different from regular soy sauce-based braised tofu. It’s a delightful side dish that the whole family will love once you make it. Enjoy your meal!
