Spicy and Sweet! Baek Jong-won's Stir-fried Octopus with Toasted Flaxseed

Hello everyone! Today, I’m excited to introduce a spicy and sweet stir-fried octopus made with Baek Jong-won’s recipe, featuring toasted flaxseed from Heuksae. Flaxseed might be unfamiliar to some, but it’s a superfood rich in Omega-3! It contains an astonishing 44 times more Omega-3 than mackerel, along with abundant dietary fiber, minerals, folate, and lignans, making it incredibly beneficial for our health. Since it’s already toasted, you can easily sprinkle it on various dishes like yogurt, cereal, or salads, similar to sesame seeds, and it adds a wonderful nutty flavor to stir-fries. Consuming around 16g per day (not exceeding 4g per serving) is beneficial for overall health and brain activity. Tonight, let’s make this delicious stir-fried octopus, a perfect match for chewy octopus, even more special by adding toasted flaxseed! This recipe, based on Baek Jong-won’s method, provides detailed steps for beginners to follow with ease.

Sauce

  • 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)

  • 6 Tbsp Soy sauce
  • 3 Tbsp Sugar
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp Cooking wine or Cheongju
  • 1/2 Tbsp Minced garlic

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the toasted flaxseed from Heuksae. It will add a delicious nutty flavor and nutritional benefits!

Step 1

Step 2

1. Clean and prepare the octopus thoroughly. 2. Rinse it under running water several times. 3. Place the octopus in a bowl and mix with 1-2 tablespoons each of salt and flour, massaging gently. This process helps remove impurities and sliminess from the octopus. 4. Rinse again with cold water and drain well. 5. Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add 2 tablespoons of minced garlic and stir-fry until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic. 6. Add the chopped onion, green onion, and optional Cheongyang pepper, and stir-fry until the vegetables soften. 7. Add the prepared octopus to the pan and stir-fry quickly over high heat. Be mindful not to overcook the octopus, as it can become tough.

Step 2

Step 3

Now, let’s make the delicious sauce. Combine 1 tbsp Gochujang, 3 tbsp Gochugaru, 6 tbsp Soy sauce, 3 tbsp Sugar, 1 tbsp Cooking wine or Cheongju, a pinch of black pepper, and 1/2 tbsp minced garlic. Mix everything well until thoroughly combined.

Step 3

Step 4

Add the prepared sauce to the stir-fried octopus and vegetables. Mix and stir-fry evenly over medium heat for about 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Step 4

Step 5

Now it’s time to add the toasted flaxseed from Heuksae! If you don’t have a measuring cup or scale, add about 1-2 teaspoons (approximately 4g) of flaxseed. I added a little extra since my husband and I will be sharing. (Recommended serving: 4g per serving). Stir-fry briefly with the sauce to incorporate the nutty flavor.

Step 5

Step 6

Finally, drizzle in 1 tablespoon of sesame oil for extra aroma and give it a final gentle mix. Your delicious stir-fried octopus is now complete! Serve it over warm rice for a flavorful bibimbap-style meal, or enjoy it with fresh lettuce wraps. Thanks to the toasted flaxseed, you can savor an even healthier and nuttier version of this classic dish.
