Spicy and Sweet Braised Radish
How to Make Sweet and Spicy Braised Radish for Winter
Let’s make a delicious braised radish with a spicy and sweet flavor. It’s so good that it tastes great even when cold.
Ingredients- 1/2 Korean radish (Mu)
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 handful green onions
- 1 handful chili peppers (optional, for extra spice)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Korean radish (Mu) is wonderfully sweet and tender in the fall and winter, making it perfect for braising. This dish is a popular winter delicacy. Make this one dish, and you’ll have a fantastic side dish ready, even when you don’t have anything else prepared.
Step 2
First, peel the radish and slice it into rounds about 0.5 to 0.7 cm thick. Arrange the radish slices in a single layer at the bottom of your pot. This ensures the seasoning will be evenly absorbed.
Step 3
Once the radish slices are nicely arranged in the pot, pour in half a cup of soy sauce evenly over the radish. The soy sauce will soak into the radish, adding a deep, savory flavor.
Step 4
Next, add 1 tablespoon of gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) for a pleasant spicy kick. Feel free to adjust the amount based on your preference for spice. If serving to children, you might want to reduce or omit it.
Step 5
Add 1 teaspoon of sugar for a touch of sweetness and 1 teaspoon of minced garlic for aroma. Gently mix everything together to ensure the seasonings are well combined with the radish.
Step 6
Now, add enough water to almost cover the radish slices. A generous handful of green onions and, if you like it spicier, a handful of chili peppers, can be added on top. Cover the pot and bring it to a simmer over medium heat.
Step 7
Let it simmer and braise until the liquid reduces and the radish is tender and has absorbed all the delicious flavors. This process allows the seasoning to penetrate deeply into the radish, creating a perfectly balanced sweet and savory taste. Check the tenderness of the radish periodically.
Step 8
Once the sauce has thickened and the radish is perfectly infused with flavor, your ultimate ‘Spicy and Sweet Braised Radish’ is ready! Serve it hot with a bowl of steamed rice for a truly satisfying meal.
