Spicy and Sweet Canned Tuna and Pepper Stew
A Simple Yet Delicious Canned Tuna and Pepper Dish: Braised Peppers with Tuna
A flavorful stew made with canned tuna and peppers. This dish is quick to prepare and packed with delicious, savory notes.
Main Ingredients- 1 can Canned Tuna (150g)
- 9 Peppers (e.g., Korean green peppers or bell peppers)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the star of the dish: 1 can of canned tuna. You can lightly rinse the can under warm water to remove some of the excess oil for a cleaner taste.
Step 2
Wash the peppers thoroughly and remove the stems. Slice them diagonally into large pieces, about 2-3 cm long. If you enjoy a spicier taste, use Korean chili peppers (like Cheongyang peppers); for a milder flavor, regular green peppers are perfect.
Step 3
Place the diagonally sliced peppers in a bowl and sprinkle with 1/2 tsp of salt. Gently toss them to coat and let them sit for about 10 minutes to soften slightly. This process helps the peppers absorb flavors better and improves their texture.
Step 4
In a separate bowl, combine 2 Tbsp of soy sauce, 2 Tbsp of mirin, 2 Tbsp of gochugaru, 1/2 Tbsp of minced garlic, 1/2 Tbsp of sugar, and 100ml of water. Whisk well until the sugar is dissolved to create a delicious seasoning sauce. This sauce is key to the dish’s flavor, so ensure it’s mixed thoroughly.
Step 5
After the peppers have been salted for 10 minutes, drain them gently by hand to remove excess moisture. Avoid rinsing them with water; just squeeze out the liquid to preserve their flavor and the saltiness from the brining.
Step 6
Heat 2 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Add the drained peppers and stir-fry for about 3 minutes until they become slightly translucent. This step helps to enhance the peppers’ natural aroma and flavor.
Step 7
Once the peppers are lightly stir-fried, pour in the prepared seasoning sauce. Bring it to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and let it simmer, allowing the peppers to absorb the flavors of the sauce.
Step 8
Continue to simmer until the sauce has reduced by about half, becoming thick and saucy. Now, add the canned tuna. Gently break apart the tuna to prevent clumping and stir it into the peppers and sauce. Continue to cook over high heat for another 2-3 minutes, allowing all the ingredients to meld together. Your delicious Spicy and Sweet Canned Tuna and Pepper Stew is ready to be enjoyed! It’s wonderful served over warm rice.
