Spicy and Sweet Grilled Bang-eo-po (Dried Anchovy Fish)

Bang-eo-po, made from dried baby anchovies (silchi), is a food rich in calcium. When a spicy sauce is generously spread on the bang-eo-po and grilled on a preheated pan, it makes a delicious side dish for rice. It’s also excellent for children due to its high calcium content.

Main Ingredients

  • 10 sheets of Bang-eo-po (dried baby anchovy fish)

Spicy & Sweet Sauce

  • 2 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 Tbsp Fish Sauce (Tuna extract type preferred)
  • 2 Tbsp Oligodang (corn syrup or rice syrup)
  • 1 Tbsp Mirin (rice wine)
  • 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
  • 2 Tbsp Toasted Sesame Seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare 10 sheets of Bang-eo-po. Bang-eo-po is thin and can easily break, so handle it with care.

Step 1

Step 2

Now, let’s make the delicious spicy and sweet sauce for grilling! In a bowl, combine 2 Tbsp Gochujang, 1 Tbsp minced garlic, 1 Tbsp fish sauce, 2 Tbsp oligodang, 1 Tbsp mirin, and 2 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds. Mix thoroughly with a spoon until the sauce is smooth and well combined, with no lumps.

Step 2

Step 3

Using a spoon or a brush, spread the prepared sauce evenly on both sides of each sheet of Bang-eo-po. Ensuring the sauce is applied uniformly will make it taste even better when grilled.

Step 3

Step 4

Heat a pan over medium-low heat. Lightly coat the pan with cooking oil using a paper towel. Place the sauced Bang-eo-po onto the heated pan and grill over low heat, turning occasionally to prevent burning. Bang-eo-po can burn easily, so pay close attention to the heat. Once one side is golden brown, flip it over and grill the other side until golden brown as well.

Step 4

Step 5

Once both sides of the Bang-eo-po are nicely golden brown and cooked, remove them from the pan and cut them into bite-sized pieces. Use scissors or a knife to cut them into convenient portions and arrange them on a plate for a delicious serving of grilled Bang-eo-po!
