  • 1 piece of yellow pickled radish (whole)
  • 1 Cheongyang chili pepper
  • 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • Green onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 Tbsp red pepper flakes (Gochugaru)
  • 1 Tbsp perilla oil (Deulgireum)
  • A pinch of sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, the key to a delicious Danmuji Muchim starts with selecting good pickled radishes. Today, I’ve prepared whole yellow pickled radishes known for their excellent texture. You can easily find them at the grocery store, so choose one that suits your preference.

Step 1

Step 2

Lightly rinse the pickled radish under running water. Then, thinly julienne it into bite-sized pieces. Aim for a thickness of about 0.3 cm to maintain a satisfying crunch.

Step 2

Step 3

Place the julienned pickled radish in a bowl. Add 1/2 tablespoon of minced garlic, 1 finely chopped Cheongyang chili pepper (seeds removed), and the chopped green onion.

Step 3

Step 4

If you enjoy a spicy kick, add the Cheongyang chili pepper for a zesty flavor. However, if you’re making this for children or prefer milder tastes, you can omit the chili pepper or adjust the amount. Green bell peppers can also be used as an alternative.

Step 4

Step 5

Now it’s time to add the seasonings that will bring out the flavor. Adjust the amount of red pepper flakes depending on the saltiness of your pickled radish. Don’t forget the perilla oil, which adds a wonderful nutty aroma.

Step 5

Step 6

Add 2 tablespoons of red pepper flakes and 1 tablespoon of perilla oil. Then, mix everything together vigorously with your hands. Ensure the seasoning is evenly distributed among the pickled radish strips. Be careful not to mash the radishes too much while mixing.

Step 6

Step 7

Finally, sprinkle a pinch of sesame seeds for a nutty finish. The combination of the Cheongyang chili’s heat, the perilla oil’s richness, and the pickled radish’s sweet and sour taste creates a truly delicious Danmuji Muchim. It’s heavenly when placed on a spoonful of rice!

Step 7

Step 8

Transfer the finished Danmuji Muchim to a nice glass bowl for an appetizing presentation. Just like the saying, ‘Good-looking food is also delicious,’ serving it neatly will make your table more vibrant.
