Spicy and Sweet Rabokki to Relieve Stress
Beat the Heat: Ultimate ‘Yeopgi Rabokki’ Recipe, Better Than ‘Yeopdduk’!
Hello everyone, this is Ryul! Even with my busy schedule, I’m finding time to cook and create videos whenever I can. Today, I’m sharing a recipe for ‘Yeopgi Rabokki’ (Spicy Rice Cake and Ramen Stew), perfect for melting away exam stress! I used to eat it super spicy to cope with all-night study sessions, haha. Unfortunately, I can’t really cook much in my current dorm, which isn’t ideal. After I upload the remaining salad pasta recipe, I’ll start posting regularly again once I’m back home!
Main Ingredients- 100g Tteokbokki rice cakes (soft wheat or rice cakes work well)
- 1 packet of ramen noodles (choose your favorite)
- 1/2 can of luncheon meat (cut into bite-sized pieces or scooped out with a spoon)
- A few peperoncino or Korean green chilies (for adjustable spiciness, optional)
- 2 sheets of fish cakes (cut into bite-sized pieces)
- 6 Vienna sausages (skewered or used as is)
Spicy & Sweet Sauce- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 Tbsp red pepper flakes (adjust for more heat if desired)
- 2 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 4 Tbsp corn syrup or rice syrup (for gloss and sweetness)
- 2 Tbsp sugar (sweetness can be adjusted)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 Tbsp red pepper flakes (adjust for more heat if desired)
- 2 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 4 Tbsp corn syrup or rice syrup (for gloss and sweetness)
- 2 Tbsp sugar (sweetness can be adjusted)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces, such as triangles or long strips. You can skewer the Vienna sausages or use them as they are.
Step 2
Finely mince the 2 cloves of garlic. Using fresh minced garlic will significantly enhance the flavor of your rabokki.
Step 3
In a bowl, combine 2 Tbsp gochujang, 2 Tbsp sugar, 4 Tbsp corn syrup (or rice syrup), 2 minced garlic cloves, and 1/4 Tbsp red pepper flakes. Whisk everything together to create the sauce. Taste and adjust the sweetness or spiciness to your preference.
Step 4
If using canned luncheon meat, like a dorm resident, scoop it out generously with a spoon or cut it into bite-sized pieces. (Optional)
Step 5
Boil a generous amount of water in a pot. Once boiling, add 100g of tteokbokki rice cakes and cook for about 3 minutes. If the rice cakes are too hard, they won’t absorb the sauce well, so slightly undercooking them is recommended.
Step 6
Drain the boiled rice cakes and add the sliced luncheon meat and fish cakes to the same water. Let them simmer together. The umami from the meat and fish cakes will make your rabokki even more delicious.
Step 7
Pour the prepared sauce into the pot and stir to dissolve it. Let it simmer until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the rice cakes and fish cakes evenly.
Step 8
Now, add the ramen noodles and cook them in the sauce. Cook for the appropriate time to avoid overcooking the noodles, stirring occasionally to ensure they are coated in the sauce.
Step 9
For an extra kick of heat, add peperoncino or finely chopped Korean green chilies at this stage. Simmering them in the sauce will further enhance their spicy aroma. Enjoy your delicious rabokki!
