Main Ingredients for Squid Rice Bowl

  • 1 handful prepared squid (about 150-200g)
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1/3 carrot
  • 1/2 green onion

Special Sauce for Squid Rice Bowl

  • 2 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 4 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp plum extract (or syrup)
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 3 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, to create the flavorful scallion oil for the rice bowl, finely chop the green onion. Slice the onion and carrot into bite-sized pieces, similar in size to the squid. Preparing all your ingredients beforehand will make the cooking process much smoother.

Step 1

Step 2

Squid can become tough if overcooked. To prevent this and speed up the cooking, it’s best to prepare the delicious sauce in advance before stir-frying the vegetables. In a bowl, combine all the sauce ingredients and mix well.

Step 2

Step 3

Heat 3 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the finely chopped green onion and stir-fry for 2 minutes to infuse the oil with scallion flavor. Cook until fragrant, being careful not to burn the green onions.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the scallion oil is ready, add the prepared squid, sliced carrot, and onion to the pan. Stir-fry over high heat for 2 minutes. Cook just until the squid turns opaque and the vegetables are slightly tender.

Step 4

Step 5

Pour the pre-made sauce into the pan. Continue to stir-fry for another 3 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and coat the ingredients. Taste the sauce during cooking and, if you find it’s not sweet enough for your preference, add about 0.5 Tbsp more sugar to adjust. This step completes your delicious squid rice bowl sauce.
