Spicy and Sweet Stir-fried Squid
Easy Method for Making Delicious Stir-fried Squid
Squid is known to be good for blood circulation, beneficial for diabetes treatment and prevention, and excellent for relieving fatigue. It’s also packed with substances that aid brain development. Let’s get cooking!
Main Ingredients
- 4 Squids (cleaned)
- 1 Onion (medium-sized)
- 1 Scallion (or green onion)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the squid by cleaning it thoroughly and then cutting it into bite-sized pieces (about 2-3 cm wide). Cutting them too small might cause them to shrink significantly when cooked, so aim for a moderate size.
Step 2
Place all the cleaned and cut squid into a pan or wok. Do not turn on the heat yet.
Step 3
Peel and wash the onion, then slice it into thin strips about 0.5 cm thick. Sliced onions will add sweetness and texture when stir-fried with the squid.
Step 4
Wash the scallion (or green onion) and slice it diagonally. This diagonal cut helps release more of its aroma and makes for an appealing presentation.
Step 5
Add the sliced onion and diagonally cut scallion to the pan with the squid. Also, add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic. Garlic will enhance the overall flavor profile.
Step 6
Now it’s time to add the seasonings. Stir in 1 tablespoon of gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) and 1 tablespoon of gochujang (Korean chili paste). These are the key ingredients for adding spiciness and umami.
Step 7
Once all ingredients and seasonings are in the pan, use your hands or a spatula to gently mix everything together, ensuring the seasoning coats the squid and vegetables evenly. Mix gently to avoid crushing the ingredients.
Step 8
Now, turn the heat to high and stir-fry quickly! Stir-fried squid should be cooked rapidly; overcooking will make the squid tough and rubbery. High heat ensures it stays tender and chewy. Cook just until the vegetables are tender-crisp and the squid turns opaque white (about 2-3 minutes). Then, immediately remove from heat.
Step 9
Transfer the delicious stir-fried squid to a serving plate. It’s ready to be enjoyed! It’s perfect served over hot rice or with fresh lettuce wraps.
