Spicy and Sweet Stir-fried Sundae
Recommended as a Kid’s Snack, A Great Way to Use Leftover Sundae
It’s summer vacation for students, and I’m so envious of college students! 🙂 Today, I’m sharing a mild and delicious stir-fried sundae recipe, perfect for a kid’s snack. It’s a fantastic way to use up leftover sundae, or you can buy sundae specifically for stir-frying. This recipe is also recommended as a tasty appetizer for dads or husbands. Let me show you how to make it!
Main Ingredients- 1 pack Sundae (approx. 300-400g)
- 1/2 Onion (sliced)
- 1/4 Cabbage (sliced)
- 1 bunch Korean Perilla Leaves (about 4-5 leaves, roughly chopped)
- 100g Mushrooms (e.g., shiitake, oyster)
- 1/2 stalk Green Onion (cut diagonally)
- 100ml Water
- 2 Tbsp Perilla Seed Powder
Seasoning Sauce- 2.5 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1.5 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 0.5 tsp Ginger Powder (or ginger juice)
- 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 0.5 Tbsp Ssamjang (Korean savory paste)
- 3 Tbsp Mirin (rice wine)
- 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Perilla Oil
- 2.5 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1.5 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 0.5 tsp Ginger Powder (or ginger juice)
- 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 0.5 Tbsp Ssamjang (Korean savory paste)
- 3 Tbsp Mirin (rice wine)
- 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Perilla Oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s make the seasoning sauce for a delicious stir-fried sundae! In a bowl, combine 2.5 Tbsp gochugaru, 1.5 Tbsp minced garlic, 0.5 tsp ginger powder (or juice), 1 Tbsp gochujang, 0.5 Tbsp ssamjang, 3 Tbsp mirin, and 2 Tbsp soy sauce. Mix them well. Taste the sauce and adjust sweetness or soy sauce to your preference for an even tastier result!
Step 2
Now, let’s prepare the vegetables. Slice the mushrooms into bite-sized pieces and wash and roughly chop the perilla leaves. Slice the onion and cabbage into strips, and cut the green onion diagonally. Preparing a generous amount of vegetables will make your sundae stir-fry more abundant and flavorful.
Step 3
Heat about 1 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cabbage and stir-fry briefly until they soften slightly. Sautéing the vegetables first helps to retain their crispiness and bring out their natural sweetness.
Step 4
Once the onion and cabbage have softened slightly, add the prepared mushrooms and stir-fry them together. The moisture released from the mushrooms will help them blend well with the other vegetables.
Step 5
Now it’s time for the star of the show, the sundae! If you’re using sundae specifically for stir-frying, add it directly. If you’re using regular sundae, add the pre-sliced sundae. This is one of the best ways to enjoy leftover sundae, and it tastes truly wonderful.
Step 6
Pour the pre-made seasoning sauce over the sundae and vegetables. Instead of adding all the sauce at once, it’s best to add it gradually while mixing with the sundae and vegetables, tasting as you go and adding more if needed. This sauce is made to be mild, making it a great snack option for kids!
Step 7
Pour in 100ml of water. As the water evaporates, the sauce will penetrate the sundae and vegetables, creating a moist stir-fry. Stir occasionally to ensure everything is evenly coated.
Step 8
Continue to stir-fry, mixing occasionally, until all the ingredients are well combined with the sauce and cooked through. The delicious aroma of the sundae cooking will fill your kitchen.
Step 9
When the sundae is almost cooked, add the roughly chopped perilla leaves and stir quickly. The fragrant flavor of the perilla leaves will elevate the taste of the sundae stir-fry. Avoid overcooking them, as their aroma can dissipate.
Step 10
Finally, add 2 Tbsp of perilla seed powder and 1 Tbsp of perilla oil, and give it a final gentle mix. Your delicious stir-fried sundae is ready! The nutty flavor of the perilla seeds and oil adds a rich depth to the dish. It’s best enjoyed while warm.
