Tteokbokki Ingredients

  • Tteokbokki rice cakes, 3 handfuls (approx. 300g)
  • Fish cakes (eomuk), 2 sheets
  • Vienna sausages, 4
  • Cabbage, 1 handful (approx. 100g)
  • Hard-boiled eggs, 3
  • Scallions, 1 handful (chopped)
  • Sliced cheese, 1 handful (optional)

Golden Seasoning Ratio

  • Gochujang (Korean chili paste), 2 Tbsp
  • Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes), 2 Tbsp
  • Soy sauce, 2 Tbsp
  • Oyster sauce, 1 Tbsp
  • Black pepper, 0.5 tsp
  • Sugar, 3 Tbsp
  • Oligodang (corn syrup), 1 Tbsp

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the Tteokbokki sauce. In a bowl, combine all the sauce ingredients: gochujang, gochugaru, soy sauce, oyster sauce, black pepper, sugar, and oligodang. Mix well until there are no lumps; this creates your delicious sauce base. While the sauce is resting, cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces and thinly slice the cabbage. For the Vienna sausages, make a few diagonal slits; this helps them cook evenly and look more appealing.

Step 2

Now, get ready to cook the Tteokbokki. In a pot, add 3 cups (approx. 600ml) of water and dissolve the prepared sauce mixture. Once the sauce is well incorporated into the water, add the Tteokbokki rice cakes. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally to prevent the rice cakes from sticking together.

Step 2

Step 3

When the rice cakes are soft and start floating to the surface, add the prepared fish cakes, cabbage, Vienna sausages, and hard-boiled eggs to the pot. Reduce the heat to medium-low and let the ingredients simmer gently, allowing them to absorb the flavorful sauce. It’s important to stir occasionally to prevent sticking to the bottom of the pot.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency and all the ingredients are coated with the delicious seasoning, stir in the chopped scallions and cook for another minute. Just before turning off the heat, add sliced cheese (if using) and cover the pot to let the cheese melt from the residual heat. Your spicy and sweet Tteokbokki is now complete! Enjoy this delightful dish with its chewy rice cakes and rich toppings!
