  • Cucumbers 2
  • Dried Shredded Squid 50g (Optional, adds chewiness and flavor)
  • Water Dropwort (Mina-ri) 20g
  • Green Onion 1 stalk
  • Green Chili Pepper 1
  • Red Chili Pepper 1

Dressing Ingredients

  • Gochujang (Korean chili paste) 2 Tbsp
  • Minced Garlic 2 Tbsp
  • Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) 3 Tbsp
  • Sugar 2 Tbsp
  • Vinegar 2 Tbsp
  • Soy Sauce 1 Tbsp
  • Korean Sea Salt (or Salt) 1 Tbsp
  • Sesame Oil 1 Tbsp
  • Toasted Sesame Seeds 1 Tbsp

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, drain the canned whelks thoroughly, discarding the liquid. If the whelks are large, cut them in half for easier eating. Wash the cucumbers, halve them lengthwise, and slice them diagonally about 3mm thick. Slice the green onion and chili peppers diagonally into bite-sized pieces. Wash the water dropwort and cut it into 3cm lengths. Ensure all vegetables are fresh.

Step 1

Step 2

Now, let’s make the delicious dressing. In a bowl, combine 2 Tbsp gochujang, 2 Tbsp minced garlic, 3 Tbsp gochugaru, 2 Tbsp sugar, 2 Tbsp vinegar, and 1 Tbsp soy sauce. Mix well until the ingredients are fully incorporated to create the dressing.

Step 2

Step 3

Add the prepared dried shredded squid to the bowl with the spicy dressing. Gently mix with your hands until the squid is evenly coated. Let it sit for a moment to allow the squid to absorb the flavors.

Step 3

Step 4

Next, add the sliced cucumbers and mix again. Be careful not to overmix, which can make the vegetables mushy. Gently toss to ensure the dressing coats the vegetables evenly. Taste and season with 1 Tbsp Korean sea salt if needed, to your preference.

Step 4

Step 5

It’s time to add the star ingredient – the whelks! Add the drained whelks to the bowl, along with the minced garlic. Gently mix once more to ensure everything is well combined. Be mindful not to overmix the whelks, as they can become tough.

Step 5

Step 6

Finally, add the green and red chili peppers for a kick of heat, 1 Tbsp sesame oil for a nutty aroma, and 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds for extra crunch. Mix gently one last time. Your mouth-watering whelk salad is ready! Doesn’t it look irresistibly delicious with its glossy sheen?

Step 6

Step 7

Using finely ground gochugaru will give it a beautiful color. This whelk salad perfectly balances spicy, sour, and sweet flavors. It’s a versatile dish that can be made in minutes with just a few basic seasonings, making it an excellent side for rice, grilled meats, noodles, or any main course. Enjoy this delightful dish!
