Main Ingredients

  • 1/3 stalk Green Onion, chopped
  • 2-3 Korean Green Peppers (Cheongyang), diagonally sliced
  • 2 packs Jjapaghetti (Black Bean Noodles)
  • 3 sheets Fish Cake, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 handful Vienna Sausages
  • 2-3 Frozen Mandu (Dumplings) (optional)
  • 1 Hard-boiled Egg (optional)
  • 1-2 slices Cheese

Sauce Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean Red Chili Paste)
  • 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean Red Chili Flakes)
  • 2 Tbsp Oligodang (Korean Corn Syrup) or Honey (adjust sweetness to taste)
  • 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
  • 2 packets Jjapaghetti Powder Sauce

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, chop the green onion into generous pieces. Heat a good amount of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat, and gently stir-fry the chopped green onions until they become fragrant and slightly softened. This step is crucial for building a rich aromatic base – let that delicious green onion aroma infuse the oil!

Step 2

Once the green onions are fragrant, add all the sauce ingredients (Gochujang, Gochugaru, Oligodang, minced garlic, and the Jjapaghetti powder sauce) to the pan. Stir-fry over low heat for about 1 minute to cook off any raw taste from the Gochujang, being careful not to burn it. Then, pour in an appropriate amount of water to dissolve the sauce and bring it to a simmer. (Adjust water quantity based on how much sauce you prefer).

Step 3

As the sauce begins to bubble, add the cut fish cakes, Vienna sausages, and the sliced Korean green peppers for a spicy kick. Let them simmer in the sauce until the fish cakes and sausages are tender and have absorbed the flavors. These additions will contribute wonderful texture and savory notes to your dish.

Step 4

Now, it’s time to add the Jjapaghetti noodles and the included flake packets. Cook them according to the package directions until the noodles are perfectly al dente. Once the noodles are cooked, turn off the heat. Top the steaming jjajangmyeon generously with 1-2 slices of cheese. The melting cheese will add a wonderful creamy and savory dimension.

Step 5

Finally, the frozen dumplings and other fried items are optional additions. If you have pre-fried or pan-fried dumplings, adding them and mixing them with the jjajang sauce makes for an even more satisfying meal. While not essential, they are a great way to enhance your dish if you desire!
