Spicy Fish Stew Ingredients

  • 1 whole fish (choose your favorite kind)
  • 2 potatoes (medium-sized)
  • 4 Korean green chili peppers (also known as ‘kkwari gochu’)
  • 3 tablespoons gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 1 tablespoon cooking wine (mirin or rice wine)
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce (anchovy or sand lance)
  • 1 cube concentrated broth (or kelp broth)
  • 3 cups water (approx. 600ml)
  • A little minced garlic

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, peel the potatoes and slice them thinly into flat rounds, about 0.5cm thick. Trim the stems off the Korean green chili peppers and slice them into 1-2cm pieces. Clean and cut the fish into bite-sized pieces.

Step 1

Step 2

In a pot, add the sliced potatoes, 3 cups of water, and 1 cube of concentrated broth.

Step 2

Step 3

Add the prepared fish to the pot and bring it to a boil over high heat. Let it simmer until the fish is cooked through.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the potatoes are halfway cooked, add the gochugaru, cooking wine, and fish sauce. Stir well and continue to simmer. Let it cook until the broth becomes clear and develops a spicy flavor.

Step 4

Step 5

Finally, add the minced garlic and the sliced Korean green chili peppers, and simmer for another short while. The chili peppers will add a pleasant crisp texture, and the garlic will enhance the overall flavor.

Step 5

Step 6

If the stew has become too thick, add another 1/2 cup of water (approx. 100ml) to reach your desired consistency. Taste and adjust the seasoning with more fish sauce or salt if needed.

Step 6

Step 7

Once all the ingredients are well combined and the aroma is enticing, turn off the heat and serve. Enjoy this delicious stew with a warm bowl of rice!
