Essential Ingredients

  • 1 packet of instant ramen noodles
  • 1/2 squid (cleaned and prepared)
  • 1/2 cup (50g) cocktail shrimp
  • 2 stalks (10cm each) green onion
  • 1 handful (80g) bean sprouts
  • 3 Tbsp cooking oil
  • 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 2 3/4 cups (550ml) water
  • 1 Tbsp cooking wine (cheongju)

Optional Ingredients

  • 1 Cheongyang chili pepper (for extra spice)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

In a deep pot, heat 3 tablespoons of cooking oil over low heat. Add 1 tablespoon of gochugaru and stir gently to infuse the oil with chili flavor, creating chili oil. Be careful not to burn the chili flakes; infusing the aroma is key.

Step 1

Step 2

Once the chili oil has developed a good aroma, add the thinly sliced green onions. Sauté over medium-low heat until the sweet fragrance of the scallions is released into the oil, enhancing the depth of the Jjamppong broth.

Step 2

Step 3

Pour 550ml (2 3/4 cups) of water into the pot with the chili oil and scallions. Add the ramen soup base and stir well to dissolve. Bring the broth to a boil, preparing to add the main ingredients.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the broth is boiling vigorously, add the ramen noodles, the prepared squid, and the cocktail shrimp. Pour in 1 tablespoon of cooking wine (cheongju) to eliminate any fishy odors from the seafood and enhance its flavor.

Step 4

Step 5

Finally, add the bean sprouts and cook for about 3-4 minutes until the noodles are perfectly cooked. Once the noodles are done, add the pre-sliced green onions and, if desired, the thinly sliced Cheongyang chili pepper. Simmer briefly to combine flavors. Your delicious Squid Jjamppong is ready! Serve immediately while hot.
