Cooking Instructions
Step 1
For the vegetables, cabbage, green onions, and onions are essential. Feel free to add other vegetables you like! Including perilla leaves will add a wonderful fragrance and enhance the overall flavor.
Step 2
Let’s prepare the special seasoning sauce for our delicious stir-fried sundae! Using a standard tablespoon measure: combine 4 Tbsp soy sauce, 4 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes), 1 Tbsp fish sauce, 1 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste), and 2 Tbsp minced garlic. (Pro-Tip: If you accidentally add perilla powder, don’t worry! It adds a nutty richness that makes this dish even more special.)
Step 3
Heat a little cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the chopped green onions and stir-fry until they become fragrant and release their aromatic oil. This step significantly deepens the dish’s flavor profile.
Step 4
Once the green onions are fragrant, add all the prepared vegetables (cabbage, onion, chili peppers, etc.), except for the perilla leaves. Stir-fry over high heat for a short time to maintain their crisp texture.
Step 5
When the vegetables have slightly softened, add the entire prepared seasoning sauce. To prevent sticking and ensure even coating, add a little water as needed while stirring. It’s important to let the sauce coat the vegetables nicely.
Step 6
Now it’s time to add the star ingredient: the sundae! Be careful not to overcook the sundae once added. Overcooking can cause it to burst, making the dish messy and compromising its chewy texture. Gently stir-fry until the sundae is coated with the sauce.
Step 7
We’re in the final stretch! Add the perilla leaves, if using, and sprinkle generously with perilla powder for a nutty and savory finish. The combination of perilla leaf aroma and perilla powder richness creates a truly delightful taste.
Step 8
Once all the ingredients are well combined and the sauce has slightly thickened to your liking, your delicious stir-fried sundae is ready! Turn off the heat and enjoy it while it’s warm. It’s a fantastic side dish for rice or a perfect accompaniment to drinks!
