Spicy & Sweet Chewy Fish Cake Stir-fry
Easy and Delicious Stir-fried Fish Cake Recipe
Lately, I’ve been really feeling how much cooking improves with practice! Everything I make seems to turn out delicious, and it’s quite amusing, haha. So, today I made stir-fried fish cake, which is a fantastic side dish for everyday meals! Although it’s hard to mess up fish cake stir-fry, I’ll share my secret to making it exceptionally tasty. Let me guide you through this simple yet flavorful recipe!
Ingredients- 4 sheets of square fish cake (approx. 200g)
- 1/4 onion
- Generous amount of cooking oil (enough to cover the fish cakes)
- 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
- 3.5 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp corn syrup (or other liquid sweetener)
- 1 Tbsp plum extract (or rice wine vinegar for a similar tang)
- 1/3 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
- A pinch of sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the fish cakes. Slice the square fish cakes thinly into bite-sized pieces. If they are too thick, they might take longer to cook or not absorb the seasoning well.
Step 2
Pour a generous amount of cooking oil into the pan. You want enough oil so the fish cakes are partially submerged as they cook. I prefer a chewy, slightly crisp texture over a soft one, so I like to fry the fish cakes slightly. This method really enhances their flavor.
Step 3
While the fish cakes are frying, let’s prepare the sauce. In a small bowl, combine 1/2 Tbsp of minced garlic and 3.5 Tbsp of soy sauce.
Step 4
Add 2 Tbsp of corn syrup and 1 Tbsp of plum extract to this mixture for sweetness and depth of flavor. Whisk them together, and your delicious stir-fry sauce is ready! Prepping the sauce beforehand makes the cooking process smoother.
Step 5
Wash and peel the onion, then slice it thinly into strips. The natural sweetness of the onion will add another layer of flavor to the fish cake stir-fry.
Step 6
Once the oil in the pan is hot, add the sliced fish cakes. Stir-fry them over medium-high heat until they turn golden brown and slightly firm and chewy. This step is crucial for developing the texture and cooking out excess moisture.
Step 7
When the fish cakes are cooked to your liking, reduce the heat to low and pour in the prepared sauce. Stir to coat the fish cakes evenly. Then, turn the heat back up to medium and add 1/3 Tbsp of gochugaru (red pepper flakes) for a touch of spice. Feel free to adjust the amount to your preference.
Step 8
Finally, add the sliced onion and a pinch of sesame seeds. Continue to stir-fry for about another minute. Once the onions become slightly translucent, turn off the heat. Let the residual heat finish cooking the ingredients, allowing the flavors to meld together perfectly.
Step 9
Ta-da! Your delicious stir-fried fish cake is ready! The savory and sweet combination is absolutely perfect with a bowl of rice. It’s so satisfying, you might find yourself finishing a whole bowl in no time. Why not make this for dinner tonight?
