Main Ingredients

  • 3 sheets of flat fish cake (Odeng)
  • 1/2 onion

Seasoning Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili powder)
  • 1 Tbsp Oligodang (corn syrup or rice syrup)
  • 1 Tbsp Soy sauce
  • 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp Sesame oil
  • 1/2 Tbsp Sugar
  • 1/2 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, wash and peel the onion. Then, slice it thinly into matchsticks about 0.5 cm thick. Slicing the onion this way helps the seasoning distribute evenly and improves the texture.

Step 1

Step 2

Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces, approximately 5×5 cm. If you notice any oil or impurities on the surface of the fish cakes, briefly immerse them in boiling water for about 3 minutes. This step helps remove excess ingredients, resulting in a cleaner flavor. Drain them well after blanching.

Step 2

Step 3

Heat 1-2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Add the prepared fish cakes and stir-fry them lightly. This process will make the fish cakes chewier and help them absorb the sauce better.

Step 3

Step 4

While the fish cakes are stir-frying, add all the seasoning ingredients: 1 Tbsp gochugaru, 1 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp oligodang, 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic, and 1/2 Tbsp sugar. Mix everything well with the fish cakes.

Step 4

Step 5

Now, add the julienned onion to the pan. Continue to stir-fry over medium heat for about 2-3 minutes, ensuring the seasoning coats the fish cakes evenly. The onion will become slightly translucent, releasing its sweetness and adding depth to the dish.

Step 5

Step 6

Finally, just before turning off the heat, drizzle in 1 Tbsp of sesame oil and sprinkle 1/2 Tbsp of toasted sesame seeds over the top to finish. The nutty aroma of sesame oil and seeds will enhance the overall deliciousness of this spicy and sweet fish cake stir-fry.
