Spicy & Sweet Dried Filefish (Agwi-po) Salad Recipe: Easy Side Dish
How to Make Dried Filefish Salad: A Delicious Side Dish for Any Meal
Often, we enjoy dried side dishes made by our mothers. This time, I decided to make a dried side dish using leftover dried filefish strips from a camping trip. Since the dried filefish was already seasoned to be sweet and savory, it tasted delicious without needing many special ingredients. This recipe is perfect for a quick and tasty side dish!
Ingredients
- Dried Filefish (or Filefish Strips) 100g
- 2 Tbsp Mayonnaise
- 1 Tbsp Mirin (Rice Wine)
- 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Red Chili Paste)
- 1 Tbsp Oligodang (Corn Syrup) or Corn Syrup
- A pinch of Toasted Sesame Seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Start by preparing 100g of dried filefish. It’s usually packaged in long strips or sold as filefish strips. This amount should be enough for about two meals as a side dish.
Step 2
Tear the dried filefish into bite-sized pieces. If they are too long, they can be difficult to eat, so tear them into manageable lengths. Place all the torn filefish into a mixing bowl.
Step 3
First, add 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise to the dried filefish. Adding mayonnaise first helps to make the filefish softer and aids in the absorption of the subsequent seasonings.
Step 4
Using your hands, vigorously mix the dried filefish and mayonnaise together in the bowl. It’s important to rub and mix them well so that the mayonnaise is evenly distributed and absorbed into the filefish. Let it sit for about 5 minutes after mixing with mayonnaise; this will make the filefish more tender and ready to absorb the other seasonings.
Step 5
Now, add 1 tablespoon of gochujang (red chili paste). Adding gochujang will provide a spicy kick and enhance the savory flavor.
Step 6
Next, add 1 tablespoon of mirin (rice wine). Mirin helps to remove any fishy odor and adds a nice aroma to the dish.
Step 7
Add 1 tablespoon of oligodang (corn syrup) or corn syrup for sweetness. Oligodang adds a glossy finish and balances the overall flavors.
Step 8
Finally, generously sprinkle a pinch of toasted sesame seeds for a nutty flavor. Don’t be shy with the sesame seeds; they add a lot of depth to the taste. All the seasoning ingredients are now added.
Step 9
Gently mix the dried filefish with the added seasonings by hand. It’s crucial to mix it thoroughly so that the seasoning is evenly distributed. Your delicious, spicy, and sweet dried filefish salad is now ready! When you don’t have much appetite, try eating this with a bowl of rice mixed with cold water. It’s incredibly tasty!
