Main Ingredients
  • 3 sheets of square fish cakes (prepare extra if you like!)
  • 1/4 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 clove garlic, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 stalk scallion, diagonally sliced

Seasoning
  • 1 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 Tbsp corn syrup or rice syrup
  • A pinch of sesame seeds
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • A drizzle of sesame oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the fish cakes. Rinse them briefly under cold water to remove surface oil. Then, cut them into bite-sized pieces (about 1.5cm x 5cm). Cutting them this size helps the sauce coat them evenly, making them even tastier. Avoid cutting them too small, as they might break apart during cooking.

Step 2

We’ll also stir-fry some vegetables to enhance the flavor. Slice the onion thinly, slice the garlic into thin rounds, and diagonally slice the scallion. This adds a nice color and aroma, making the finished dish look more appealing.

Step 3

The key to a delicious fish cake stir-fry is the sauce! In a bowl, combine 1 Tbsp gochujang, 1 Tbsp sugar, 2 Tbsp corn syrup, and 1 tsp soy sauce. Mix well. Preparing the sauce in advance makes the stir-frying process much smoother and ensures the flavors are evenly distributed.

Step 4

Now, let’s start stir-frying! Heat 1-2 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan over low heat. Add the sliced scallions and garlic, and sauté until fragrant. This step infuses the oil with their aroma, adding depth to the dish. Next, add the sliced onions and stir-fry until they become translucent.

Step 5

Once the onions start to soften, add the prepared fish cakes to the pan and stir-fry them together. Make sure to stir continuously to prevent the fish cakes from sticking. When the fish cakes are slightly cooked, pour in all the prepared sauce. Stir-fry quickly to ensure the sauce coats the fish cakes evenly. Be careful not to overcook, as the fish cakes can become tough. Once the sauce is well combined and looks glossy, turn off the heat. Finally, sprinkle with sesame seeds and a drizzle of sesame oil for a perfect finish! Your spicy and sweet gochujang fish cake stir-fry is ready!
