It’s reminiscent of the popular Korean street food ‘So Tteok So Tteok’ (sausage and rice cake skewers). • Tteokbokki rice cakes 300g
  • Boiled eggs 2
  • Cooking oil 3 Tbsp
  • Gochujang (Korean chili paste) 2 Tbsp
  • Ketchup 2 Tbsp
  • Soy sauce 1 Tbsp
  • Plum syrup (or corn syrup) 1 Tbsp
  • Sugar 1 Tbsp

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the sauce for our delicious Gireum Tteokbokki. In a bowl, combine 2 Tbsp of gochujang for a spicy kick, 2 Tbsp of ketchup for a touch of sweetness and tang, 1 Tbsp of soy sauce for savory depth, 1 Tbsp of plum syrup (or corn syrup) for a subtle fruity sweetness, and 1 Tbsp of sugar. Whisk everything together until well combined and smooth. Taste and adjust seasonings if needed.

Step 2

Peel the 2 boiled eggs. If you boiled them recently, rinsing them under cold water can help make the peeling process easier.

Step 3

Prepare the 90g of Vienna sausages by making diagonal scores across them, about 4-5 times. These cuts will help the sauce penetrate better and create a visually appealing texture as they cook.

Step 4

While other ingredients are being prepped, soak the 300g of tteokbokki rice cakes in water for about 10-15 minutes until they soften slightly. Drain them thoroughly in a colander. Removing excess water is crucial to prevent oil splattering and to ensure the rice cakes don’t stick together.

Step 5

Now, let’s start stir-frying. Heat 3 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the peeled boiled eggs and the drained tteokbokki rice cakes. Stir-fry them, letting them crisp up slightly, as if you’re deep-frying them. This process will give the rice cakes a wonderfully chewy texture with a slightly crispy exterior.

Step 6

Once the rice cakes are lightly browned and slightly crisp, add the scored Vienna sausages to the pan. Continue to stir-fry everything together for another 1-2 minutes until the sausages are heated through and slightly golden.

Step 7

As the scores on the sausages begin to open up, pour in the prepared sauce. Quickly stir-fry everything on medium-high heat, ensuring the sauce coats the rice cakes and sausages evenly. It’s important to keep the sauce from burning, so continuous stirring is key. Be mindful of the heat to avoid any bitter taste from burnt sauce.

Step 8

The dish is now complete! Transfer the finished Gireum Tteokbokki to a serving plate. For an extra touch of flavor and visual appeal, sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds. Enjoy this delightful combination of chewy rice cakes and savory sausages – it’s truly a treat, much like ‘So Tteok So Tteok’, perfect for a meal or a snack!
