Main Ingredients- 1 fresh squid (cleaned, insides and backbone removed)
- 1/3 carrot (julienned)
- 1 shiitake mushroom (sliced)
- 2 sausages (sliced diagonally or as desired)
Spicy & Sweet Sauce- 1 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1/2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp honey (or corn syrup)
- 1/2 Tbsp garlic powder (or minced garlic)
- A pinch of maesilcheong (Korean plum extract, optional for added sweetness and flavor)
- 1/2 cup water
- A pinch of sesame seeds (for garnish)
- 1 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1/2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp honey (or corn syrup)
- 1/2 Tbsp garlic powder (or minced garlic)
- A pinch of maesilcheong (Korean plum extract, optional for added sweetness and flavor)
- 1/2 cup water
- A pinch of sesame seeds (for garnish)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the squid by cutting it into bite-sized pieces. Thinly julienne the carrot and slice the shiitake mushroom. Slice the sausages diagonally or into your preferred shape. Having all your ingredients prepped beforehand will significantly speed up the cooking process.
Step 2
Heat a lightly oiled pan over medium-high heat. Add the sliced sausages and cook until they are lightly browned. The sausages release some oil, which helps to coat the pan and adds a wonderful savory flavor to the final dish.
Step 3
Once the sausages are lightly browned, add the prepared squid to the pan and stir-fry together. When the squid turns opaque, add all the prepared spicy and sweet sauce ingredients. Stir quickly to ensure the sauce coats the squid evenly. Cooking over high heat for a short time will keep the squid tender and prevent it from becoming tough.
Step 4
After the sauce has coated the squid, add the sliced shiitake mushrooms and carrots. Stir-fry until the vegetables are slightly tender. Then, pour in the 1/2 cup of water. Bring to a simmer and let it cook until the sauce thickens slightly and the flavors meld beautifully with the ingredients. Reduce the heat to medium-low during this simmering stage.
Step 5
Finally, spoon the delicious squid stir-fry generously over a bowl of warm rice. Garnish with a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds for a nutty aroma and visual appeal. Enjoy this mouthwatering, spicy, and sweet squid rice bowl!
