Main Ingredients

  • 2 squid, cleaned
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 potato, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 carrot, thinly sliced
  • 1 green onion, diagonally sliced
  • 5 Korean chili peppers (cheongyang peppers), diagonally sliced
  • 2 Tbsp minced garlic

Sauce

  • 3-4 Tbsp red chili powder (adjust to spice preference)
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1-2 Tbsp sugar (adjust to sweetness preference)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil (like canola oil)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Clean the squid thoroughly and then slice it into bite-sized pieces, about the length and thickness of your fingers. Slicing them not too thin or thick ensures a pleasant texture after cooking.

Step 1

Step 2

Heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a wide pan. Add the sliced squid and minced garlic. Then, add all of the prepared stir-fry sauce ingredients (red chili powder, soy sauce, sugar, salt, black pepper). Stir-fry over high heat until the squid turns a vibrant red and is evenly coated with the sauce. This quick cooking method helps retain the squid’s tender texture.

Step 2

Step 3

Once the squid is coated in the sauce and has a tempting color, add all the prepared vegetables (onion, potato, carrot). Continue to stir-fry, mixing everything together with a spatula until the vegetables are well combined with the squid.

Step 3

Step 4

If you want the potatoes to cook faster, reduce the heat to low after adding the vegetables and cover the pan for a few minutes. This allows the potatoes to soften without burning the other ingredients. The covered cooking also helps the flavors meld beautifully. Just before turning off the heat, drizzle in 1 tablespoon of sesame oil and a pinch of black pepper for an aromatic finish. Your delicious stir-fried squid is now ready! Serve hot over steamed rice.
