Main Ingredients- 1 Pear (medium size)
- 1 root of Bellflower root (approx. 50g, trimmed of fine roots)
- 2 Jujubes (Chinese dates)
- 2 Tbsp Honey
Garnish (Optional)- 1/4 Tbsp Pine nuts
- 1/4 Tbsp Pine nuts
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the bellflower root, a key ingredient for Baesuk. Wash the bellflower root thoroughly to remove any dirt and fine roots, then thinly julienne it. Be careful not to cut it too thickly, as this will increase cooking time.
Step 2
Next, prepare the jujubes. Rinse them under running water to remove impurities. Then, make a lengthwise cut with a knife and remove the seeds. Removing the seeds makes them easier to eat and improves the texture.
Step 3
Wash the pear clean. Cut off the top part of the pear, about 1-2cm from the stem, to create a lid. Carefully scoop out the inside of the pear with a knife. Avoid scooping too thinly, as it will be difficult to fill with the ingredients later. Keep the scooped-out pear flesh aside for now.
Step 4
Finely chop the reserved pear flesh. It’s best to chop it coarsely rather than too finely, so there’s a pleasant texture when you bite into it.
Step 5
Now, it’s time to mix the filling for the Baesuk. In a large bowl, combine the julienned bellflower root, the coarsely chopped pear flesh, and 2 tablespoons of honey for sweetness. Mix well until everything is evenly combined. The honey complements the pear’s subtle sweetness and helps blend the ingredients.
Step 6
Once the filling ingredients are well mixed, carefully stuff the hollowed-out pear with this mixture. Don’t pack it too tightly; leave a little space. After filling, arrange the prepared jujubes attractively on top, and then place the pear lid back on to complete the shape.
Step 7
Now it’s time to steam the prepared pear. Place water in a steamer and bring it to a boil. Then, place the dish containing the pear on top of the steamer. Reduce the heat to medium-low and steam gently for about 40 minutes. Steam until the pear becomes translucent and tender.
Step 8
Once the steam is rising, carefully remove the pear after steaming for 40 minutes. Place the steamed pear in a nice serving bowl, along with its warm juices. Finally, sprinkle some savory pine nuts on top for a beautiful and delicious finish. This nutritious Baesuk is best enjoyed warm right away.
