Steamed Sweet Potato Perfection: A Foolproof Method
Steaming Sweet Potatoes in a Pot: The Ultimate Guide to Cooking Time
Enjoying the sweet potatoes my mother-in-law gifted me during Chuseok! I’ve been enjoying them as a snack and even a meal replacement, and even making warm sweet potato lattes. This recipe guarantees wonderfully soft and sweet steamed sweet potatoes, perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients- 4 Sweet Potatoes (approx. 552g)
- 600-700ml Water
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Start by selecting the amount of sweet potatoes you wish to steam. Choose as many as will comfortably fit in your pot. (Personally, my husband isn’t a big fan, so I often steam just a few at a time for myself.)
Step 2
Thoroughly wash the sweet potatoes under running water, gently scrubbing away any dirt or debris. Ensuring they are clean is key to enjoying their pure sweetness.
Step 3
Trim off both ends of the washed sweet potatoes. This step is crucial! Cutting off the ends allows the moisture generated during steaming to penetrate the sweet potato, resulting in an exceptionally moist and tender texture.
Step 4
Pour about 600-700ml of water into your pot. Place a steamer basket securely inside. The water level should be below the steamer, ensuring enough steam is generated without the sweet potatoes boiling directly in water.
Step 5
Arrange the cleaned and trimmed sweet potatoes in a single layer within the steamer basket. Place the pot over high heat on your stovetop to begin the steaming process.
Step 6
Once you see steam gently rising from the sides of the pot, cover it tightly with a lid. Reduce the heat to medium or medium-low and steam for approximately 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, keep the lid on and let the sweet potatoes steam for an additional 2 minutes to rest. This resting period helps the sweet potatoes become perfectly tender inside.
Step 7
After the resting period, carefully remove the lid. Insert a chopstick or skewer into one of the sweet potatoes to check for doneness. If the chopstick slides in smoothly and easily, they are perfectly cooked! If it feels a bit stiff, return the lid and continue steaming for a few more minutes, or extend the resting time.
Step 8
Once perfectly steamed, carefully remove the sweet potatoes from the pot and transfer them to a wire rack to cool slightly. This method yields wonderfully moist and sweet steamed sweet potatoes. Enjoy them warm as a delightful snack or let them cool for a different texture!
