Make Delicious Sukiyaki at Home – A Perfect Beef Hot Pot Dinner
Introducing a Sukiyaki recipe, the perfect beef hot pot to enjoy with your whole family on a cozy evening. The sweet and savory broth, tender beef, and fresh vegetables combine to create an unforgettable dinner feast.
Main Ingredients- 500g thinly sliced beef for bulgogi
- 1 bunch bok choy (about 5 heads)
- 1/2 block firm tofu
- 1 handful mushrooms (shiitake, oyster, or your preference)
- 2 large stalks of the white part of napa cabbage
Broth Ingredients- 1 handful dried anchovies (for broth)
- 4 cups water (approx. 800ml)
- 1 handful dried anchovies (for broth)
- 4 cups water (approx. 800ml)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s make a delicious broth! In a pot, combine 4 cups of water and the dried anchovies. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium-low and simmer for about 10 minutes to extract the anchovy flavor. Remove the anchovies. Then, add all the broth seasoning ingredients (2 Tbsp hot pot soy sauce, 2 Tbsp chicken stock, 1 tsp black pepper, 2 Tbsp mentsuyu) and stir well to combine. Bring to a simmer and set aside. (If you don’t have chicken stock, add an extra cup of water and adjust the soy sauce amount accordingly.)
Step 2
Now it’s time to prepare the fresh vegetables. Wash the bok choy thoroughly, trim the root ends slightly, and cut into bite-sized pieces. Slice the tofu into 1.5cm thick pieces. Prepare the mushrooms by removing the stems and tearing or slicing them. Cut the white parts of the napa cabbage into large diagonal pieces for added fragrance.
Step 3
Gently pat the thinly sliced beef dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. Place the beef in a bowl and add all the beef marinade ingredients (1/2 cup bulgogi soy sauce, 3 Tbsp cooking wine, 2 Tbsp oligosaccharide, 1 Tbsp sugar, 2 tsp black pepper, 2 Tbsp sesame oil). Mix gently with your hands and let it marinate for about 10 minutes. Marinating beforehand will make the beef exceptionally tender and flavorful.
Step 4
Now, let’s artfully arrange everything in the hot pot. You can place the thick tofu slices at the bottom of the pot. Alternatively, lightly oil a pan and pan-fry the tofu until golden brown for an extra nutty flavor. Arrange the prepared mushrooms, napa cabbage, and the marinated beef attractively around the pot. (We’ll add the bok choy at the end so it doesn’t get too soft.)
Step 5
Carefully pour the warm broth you prepared over the ingredients. It’s best to pour enough broth so the ingredients are mostly submerged. Place the pot over medium heat and bring it to a boil. Once the broth is simmering, reduce the heat slightly and let the ingredients cook.
Step 6
When the beef is almost cooked through and the broth has reduced slightly, add the bok choy you prepared. Add it decoratively and let it wilt just slightly to maintain its crisp texture. Check if all the ingredients are cooked through, then finish with a sprinkle of black pepper to enhance the aroma.
Step 7
After enjoying the delicious Sukiyaki, you can add udon noodles, ramen noodles, or rice to the remaining broth and stir-fry it for a fantastic second course! This will provide a hearty and satisfying end to your meal. Enjoy a happy mealtime with your whole family around a pot full of deliciousness.
