Make a Hearty and Flavorful Tuna Kimchi Rice Bowl with Common Ingredients
You can create a wonderful meal with just kimchi and tuna! Give it a try ^^. This dish offers a delightful combination of spicy, sweet, and savory flavors.
Ingredients- 2 cups Napa cabbage kimchi, chopped into bite-sized pieces
- 1/4 onion, finely minced
- 1 can tuna, drained of excess oil
- 1 cup water (or broth for deeper flavor)
- 0.5 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
- 0.5 Tbsp soy sauce
- 0.5 Tbsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp cornstarch slurry (mix 1 Tbsp water with 0.5 Tbsp cornstarch)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the main ingredients. Chop the Napa cabbage kimchi into bite-sized pieces using scissors or a knife, making them easy for everyone to eat. Finely mince the onion as well; this will help the tuna and kimchi sauce to distribute evenly and absorb flavors better.
Step 2
Heat 1 tablespoon of sesame oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped kimchi and stir-fry until it becomes tender and fragrant. Then, add the minced onion and continue to stir-fry until the onion turns translucent. This step softens the kimchi’s tanginess and brings out its natural sweetness.
Step 3
Once the onion is translucent, add the drained tuna to the pan. Gently stir-fry the tuna with the kimchi mixture, being careful not to mash the tuna too much. Pour in 1 cup of water (or your preferred broth) and bring it to a simmer. Stir occasionally as it cooks.
Step 4
While the kimchi and tuna mixture is simmering, it’s time to add the seasonings. Stir in 0.5 tablespoon of red pepper flakes for a pleasant spiciness. Add 0.5 tablespoon of soy sauce for savory depth and 0.5 tablespoon of sugar to balance the acidity of the kimchi and round out the flavors. Mix everything well and continue to cook briefly.
Step 5
Finally, prepare the cornstarch slurry to thicken the sauce and give it a glossy finish. In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of water with 0.5 tablespoon of cornstarch until smooth. Gradually add this slurry to the simmering mixture in the pan while stirring constantly. Add more slurry as needed until you reach your desired sauce consistency – it should be thick enough to coat the rice but not too stiff.
Step 6
To serve, spoon the delicious tuna kimchi mixture generously over a bowl of warm rice. You can garnish with seaweed flakes, sesame seeds, or a fried egg for an extra touch. Enjoy your incredibly simple yet satisfying Tuna Kimchi Rice Bowl – it’s truly delicious! ^^
