Main Ingredients- 2 cans of mackerel
- 1 stalk of green onion
- 2 Korean chili peppers (cheongyang peppers)
Seasoning Sauce- 6 Tbsp soy sauce
- 3 Tbsp oligo syrup (or corn syrup)
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 tsp sugar
- Pinch of black pepper
- 1 Tbsp cooking sake (or rice wine)
- 1 Tbsp perilla oil
- 6 Tbsp soy sauce
- 3 Tbsp oligo syrup (or corn syrup)
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 tsp sugar
- Pinch of black pepper
- 1 Tbsp cooking sake (or rice wine)
- 1 Tbsp perilla oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the vegetables. Finely chop the green onion into bite-sized pieces. Similarly, finely chop the Korean chili peppers. If you prefer a spicier dish, feel free to adjust the amount of chili peppers.

Step 2
Now, it’s time to use the canned mackerel. Carefully open two cans of mackerel and place them into a pot suitable for simmering. For this recipe, I drained all the liquid from one can and used about two-thirds of the liquid from the other can. This helps to enhance the original flavor of the mackerel while adding depth.

Step 3
In a separate bowl, combine all the seasoning ingredients: 6 Tbsp soy sauce, 3 Tbsp oligo syrup, 1 tsp minced garlic, 1 Tbsp gochugaru, 1 tsp sugar, a pinch of black pepper, 1 Tbsp cooking sake, and 1 Tbsp perilla oil. Mix them well until there are no lumps, creating a smooth sauce.

Step 4
Evenly pour the prepared seasoning sauce over the mackerel in the pot. Then, turn the heat to high and bring it to a boil. During the cooking process, periodically spoon some of the delicious simmering liquid from the bottom of the pot over the mackerel. This technique ensures the sauce penetrates the fish deeply, resulting in a much more flavorful simmer.

Step 5
After adding the sauce, continue to simmer over high heat for about 7-8 minutes. The dish is ready when the sauce has reduced to a nice glaze and the mackerel looks glossy. This method allows children to enjoy the dish without worrying about small bones, and it’s incredibly quick to prepare, making your mealtime special. Enjoy with a bowl of hot rice!
