Tteokbokki Ingredients- 300g Guk Tteok or Tteokbokki Tteok (rice cakes)
- 4 sheets of square fish cakes
- 1 large green onion
- 2 hard-boiled eggs
Golden Ratio Sauce- 4 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 3 Tbsp Sugar
- 2 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 tsp Beef Dasida (or other umami seasoning powder)
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp cooking oil (optional, adds shine and flavor)
- A pinch of black pepper
- 800ml Water
- 4 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 3 Tbsp Sugar
- 2 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 1 tsp Beef Dasida (or other umami seasoning powder)
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp cooking oil (optional, adds shine and flavor)
- A pinch of black pepper
- 800ml Water
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Soak the rice cakes in water for 5 minutes until they become soft. This step helps the rice cakes absorb the sauce better and makes them less chewy.
Step 2
Boil the eggs until hard-boiled. Add a pinch of salt to boiling water and carefully place the eggs. Cook for 10 minutes. After boiling, immediately transfer the eggs to cold water to cool them down; this makes them easier to peel.
Step 3
Cut the green onion into large pieces. Cutting them large helps them maintain their shape while cooking and makes the dish visually appealing.
Step 4
Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces. If you love fish cakes, feel free to add extra or cut them into different shapes, like long strips.
Step 5
Combine all the sauce ingredients (gochujang, sugar, gochugaru, beef dasida, minced garlic, cooking oil, and black pepper) in a pot or pan. Add the 800ml of water and mix well. Preparing the sauce mixture beforehand makes cooking much easier.
Step 6
Add the soaked rice cakes, chopped green onion, and fish cakes to the sauce mixture. Bring to a rolling boil over high heat. It’s important to let the ingredients simmer together in the sauce.
Step 7
Once the tteokbokki starts to vigorously boil, reduce the heat to medium. Cook until the rice cakes are tender and the sauce has thickened slightly, coating the cakes. Turn off the heat and serve. For a brothier consistency, don’t overcook. Enjoy your delicious Gukmul Tteokbokki, perhaps garnished with the hard-boiled eggs!
