Essential Ingredients- 2 thick green onions
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
I’m going to show you a very easy and simple way to slice scallions without a special scallion cutter. First, wash two thick green onions thoroughly. Peel off any outer leaves and rinse them well under running water.
Step 2
Now, cut the green onions into pieces about the size of a child’s hand. If you cut them too long, it will be inconvenient when you mix them with seasoning later, and you might have to cut them again. So, cutting them into bite-sized pieces is best. We will use both the white and green parts of the scallions. Stand the cut scallions upright and, holding your knife almost parallel to the cutting board, make long, shallow cuts from the top downwards. Be careful not to cut all the way through to the root end.
Step 3
After making these cuts, the core part that looks like a heart will separate. Set this part aside for now. You can use this core for other dishes later or slice it thinly on its own. For today, we’ll just set it aside.
Step 4
Now, take the uncut parts of the green onion and imagine rolling them up twice. Once they are layered like this, use your knife to thinly slice them into strands. Isn’t that incredibly simple? By slicing them in layers like this, you can make a much larger quantity of scallion strands at once compared to slicing them individually. Even though it might not look like much when layered, you’ll have a generous amount after slicing.
Step 5
The leafy parts of the green onion separate easily, one layer at a time. You can speed things up by cutting them in half, then stacking 3-4 layers together before slicing. Once sliced thinly, soak the scallions in cold water for about 5-10 minutes to remove their spiciness. Drain them well and mix with your favorite seasonings for a delicious salad.
Step 6
And there you have it! Perfectly sliced scallions, made easily and beautifully without a specialized cutter. Now you can enjoy fresh scallion salad anytime without the hassle of looking for a scallion cutter. Slicing scallions is much easier than you think!
