Super Simple Seasoned Gim (Seaweed) from Stale Gim – A Rice-Stealing Side Dish
Don’t Throw Away Stale Gim! Transform It into a Delicious Side Dish.
Got some stale, slightly soggy gim (seaweed) languishing in your fridge? Don’t toss it! You can easily transform it into a savory and flavorful side dish that’s perfect with rice. It’s a fantastic way to combat a lack of appetite, and it tastes amazing when mixed with warm rice. The zesty kick from the Cheongyang chili peppers cuts through any richness, creating a magical flavor combination. Here’s how!
Main Ingredients- 10 sheets of stale gim (dried seaweed)
- 1 Cheongyang chili pepper (optional, for a spicy kick)
Seasoning Ingredients- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp plum extract (adds sweetness and shine)
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp mirin (helps remove any unpleasant odors)
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp sesame seeds (for nutty flavor)
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp plum extract (adds sweetness and shine)
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp mirin (helps remove any unpleasant odors)
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp sesame seeds (for nutty flavor)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare your stale gim. If it’s too soft, it might crumble too easily, so a light toast will revive its crispness.
Step 2
Heat a pan over medium-low heat. Place the stale gim sheets onto the warm pan. Be careful not to use high heat, as the gim can burn quickly.
Step 3
Gently toast the gim for about 30 seconds to 1 minute per side, until it becomes lightly golden and fragrant. This process removes the staleness and enhances its nutty aroma.
Step 4
Transfer the toasted gim to a bowl and crumble it into bite-sized pieces with your hands. You can crumble it coarsely or finely, depending on your preference.
Step 5
Now, let’s make the delicious seasoning. Start by adding 2 tablespoons of soy sauce.
Step 6
Add 2 tablespoons of sesame oil for a rich, nutty aroma.
Step 7
Stir in 1 tablespoon of plum extract, which adds natural sweetness and a lovely sheen. If you don’t have plum extract, you can use sugar instead.
Step 8
Add 1 tablespoon of sugar to further enhance the sweetness.
Step 9
Include 1 tablespoon of mirin (or cooking wine) to help mask any fishy odors and improve the overall flavor.
Step 10
Add 1 teaspoon of minced garlic for a hint of pungent flavor. You can omit this if you’re not a fan of garlic.
Step 11
Finally, for the ultimate nutty flavor! Generously add 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds. Rubbing them between your hands before adding will release even more fragrance.
Step 12
Finely mince 1 Cheongyang chili pepper. If you like it spicy, use the whole pepper; otherwise, use half or omit it. Mix the minced chili into the seasoning.
Step 13
All the seasoning ingredients are now well combined, creating a flavorful dressing. It looks appetizing with a nice sheen.
Step 14
Pour the prepared seasoning over the crumbled gim.
Step 15
Now for the most important step! Gently mix the seasoning into the gim with your hands, ensuring it’s evenly distributed. Handle the gim carefully to avoid breaking it further. Your delicious, rice-stealing seasoned gim is now ready!
