Main Ingredients
  • 1/4 head of cabbage
  • Plenty of water (for steaming)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare 1/4 head of fresh cabbage and wash it thoroughly. Remove the tough core by cutting it out or slicing it away. Then, cut the cabbage into your desired bite-sized pieces, about 5cm in length. Cutting them slightly larger will prevent them from becoming too mushy during steaming.

Step 2

Now, let’s prepare the steamer. Take a wide pot or wok and place a steamer basket inside. Pour plenty of water into the bottom of the pot. It’s crucial to ensure the water level is below the bottom of the steamer basket; the water is just there to create steam.

Step 3

Arrange the cut cabbage evenly in a single layer in the steamer basket. Avoid overcrowding; leaving some space allows heat to circulate evenly for a more tender result.

Step 4

Cover the pot tightly with a lid and steam over high heat (like a strong gas burner flame) for about 8 to 10 minutes. The exact steaming time may vary slightly depending on the thickness and size of your cabbage pieces. After 8 minutes, you can test for doneness by piercing a piece with a chopstick; it should slide in easily when tender. Be careful not to over-steam, as this can make the cabbage too soft. Freshly steamed cabbage is naturally sweet and tender, delicious on its own!
