Sweet and Savory Soy Braised Potatoes
Deliciously Sweet and Savory Soy-Braised Potatoes – A Crowd-Pleaser!
I made the ever-popular sweet and savory soy-braised potatoes again! This dish is a hit with both kids and adults. The potatoes are simmered until tender in a savory soy sauce glaze, making them wonderfully fluffy and incredibly delicious. It’s a perfect side dish that’s simple to make and guaranteed to be a hit!
Main Ingredients- 3 medium potatoes
- 1/2 onion
- 2 Korean green chilies (optional, for heat)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, peel the 3 medium potatoes and cut them into bite-sized cubes, about 2cm (approx. 0.8 inches). To remove excess starch and ensure a softer texture, soak the cut potatoes in cold water for about 5 minutes. Drain them thoroughly. Slice the 1/2 onion into thick strips, and finely chop the 2 Korean green chilies (removing seeds if you prefer less heat).
Step 2
In a wide pan or skillet, add the drained potatoes. Pour in 4 Tbsp soy sauce, 4 Tbsp corn syrup (or honey), and 2 Tbsp cooking oil. Gently toss to coat the potatoes evenly with the seasoning and let them marinate for a few minutes. (Tip: Using a wide pan from the start makes cooking easier as you won’t need to transfer ingredients. It also ensures the potatoes are in a single layer, allowing the sauce to penetrate better.)
Step 3
Add enough water to the pan to come halfway up the sides of the potatoes. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low, cover the pan, and simmer for about 10 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender. After 10 minutes, remove the lid and continue to simmer for another 5-10 minutes, allowing the sauce to reduce and thicken slightly.
Step 4
Once the potatoes have absorbed most of the flavor, you can set aside a portion for children if desired. For the adult portion, add the chopped Korean green chilies for a spicy kick. Simmer for an additional minute or two to meld the flavors. Finally, sprinkle with sesame seeds for garnish. Your delicious sweet and savory soy-braised potatoes are ready!
