Main Ingredients- 2 slices of bread (thicker slices work best)
- 2 large eggs
- 1 ripe banana
Seasoning & Extras- 4 Tbsp granulated sugar or white sugar (adjust to your preference)
- 1 knob of butter (about 10g)
- 4 Tbsp granulated sugar or white sugar (adjust to your preference)
- 1 knob of butter (about 10g)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare your banana. Peel one ripe banana and slice it into four equal pieces lengthwise. Aim for about 1cm thickness so they hold their shape while cooking. This ensures a lovely texture in your French toast.
Step 2
In a shallow bowl, crack two large eggs. Add 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar (or white sugar). Whisk the eggs and sugar together until well combined and slightly frothy. Make sure the sugar is fully dissolved for a smooth custard.
Step 3
Now, let’s caramelize the bananas to bring out their sweetness. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of sugar evenly over the banana slices. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Carefully place the sugared banana slices in the skillet and cook for a short while. The sugar will begin to melt and lightly coat the bananas.
Step 4
Once one side of the bananas is lightly golden, gently flip them over. Sprinkle the remaining 1 tablespoon of sugar over the other side. Continue to cook over medium heat for a little longer, allowing both sides to develop a delicious caramel glaze.
Step 5
You’ll notice a wonderful aroma as the bananas caramelize. When the edges are golden brown and the bananas are tender, carefully remove them from the skillet and set aside. Be mindful not to overcook them, as they can become mushy.
Step 6
It’s time to prepare the French toast! Take your two slices of bread and dip them into the egg mixture, ensuring they are coated on both sides. Let them soak for about 10 seconds per side; this allows the bread to absorb the custard for a wonderfully soft interior.
Step 7
Heat a clean non-stick skillet over medium-low heat. Add a little cooking oil. Carefully place the egg-soaked bread slices into the preheated pan. As the bread begins to cook, add your knob of butter to one side of the pan to start melting.
Step 8
Once the bottom of the French toast is golden brown, carefully flip it over. As it cooks, spoon the melted butter over the top of the toast. If needed, add another small piece of butter and continue to flip and baste the toast until both sides are beautifully golden and the butter has infused it with richness. Adjust heat as needed to prevent burning.
Step 9
Arrange the warm, golden French toast on a plate. Top generously with the caramelized banana slices. For an extra touch, you can drizzle with maple syrup, dust with powdered sugar, or add fresh fruit. Enjoy your delicious homemade Banana French Toast!
