  • 4 tablespoons water
  • 1 small piece of butter (about 5g)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare your bread. Cut it into bite-sized cubes that are easy to pop into your mouth. If you’re making this with children, cutting them into fun shapes can be an enjoyable part of the process!

Step 2

Now, it’s time to dry out the bread and make it crispy. Use a dry pan without any oil and heat it over medium-low heat. Once the pan is warm, add the bread cubes and toast them on both sides until they are lightly golden. This process will remove moisture, making them extra crunchy. Be careful not to burn them; just toast them lightly.

Step 3

Next, let’s make the delicious caramel sauce. For about 2-3 slices of bread, measure 5 tablespoons of sugar and 4 tablespoons of water into the pan. Turn the heat to medium and, crucially, do not stir the mixture until the sugar has completely dissolved. This is the key to a perfect caramel! Let it boil naturally and watch as the color begins to change.

Step 4

Once the sugar has melted and started to boil, and you see it turning a caramel brown color, it’s time to add your piece of butter. Adding butter will enhance the flavor and give the caramel sauce a beautiful sheen. Once the butter melts, gently swirl the pan to incorporate it evenly into the caramel.

Step 5

It’s important to get the caramel sauce consistency right. If it’s too thick, it will be difficult to coat the bread. Aim for a consistency that flows smoothly but has a slight viscosity – not too watery and not too stiff. When it reaches your desired thickness, immediately turn off the heat.

Step 6

Finally, add the crispy bread cubes you prepared earlier into the pan with the caramel sauce. Gently toss them to ensure every piece is evenly coated. To prevent them from clumping together as the caramel cools, spread them out on a plate individually and let them cool. This ensures your caramel popcorn remains wonderfully crisp!
