Sweet Fig and Cream Cheese Open Sandwich

How to Make Fig and Cream Cheese Open Sandwich: Cleaning Figs and Enjoying Them Deliciously

Sweet Fig and Cream Cheese Open Sandwich

For a delightful holiday breakfast, I made a fig open-faced sandwich! This recipe covers everything from how to wash figs to the best ways to enjoy them. I bought a whole box of 500g figs, which allowed me to make sandwiches and salads. While there are many ways to enjoy figs, eating them in a simple open-faced sandwich is incredibly easy and delicious. I recommend trying it with cream cheese first, and then exploring other uses like jams or roasted figs. I spread cream cheese on whole wheat bread, topped it with fresh baby greens, and then added the figs. It was wonderfully tasty even without any extra sauce! This is a perfect recipe to savor the natural sweetness of fresh figs.

Sandwich Ingredients

  • 2 fresh figs
  • 2 slices whole wheat bread
  • 3 tablespoons cream cheese
  • A handful of baby greens

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Figs contain a natural tenderizing enzyme called ‘ficin,’ which helps tenderize meat and aids digestion, especially when eaten with duck. The medicinal properties of figs are often summarized as ‘3-in, 3-help’: ‘3-in’ refers to antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects, while ‘3-help’ signifies digestive aid, constipation relief, and cardiovascular disease prevention. Figs have a low calorie count of 45 kcal per 100g when fresh, and 271 kcal when dried. Their richness in ficin, a protein-digesting enzyme, makes them an excellent post-meal fruit for aiding digestion.

Step 1

Step 2

Let me guide you through washing and preparing the figs. Unlike other fruits, figs can become mushy if soaked in water, so be gentle. You can either lightly wipe the surface with a damp cloth or paper towel, or hold the fig by its stem and rinse it briefly under running water. Since they are delicate, it’s best to consume them within 2-3 days or use them to make jam. Drying them is also a great option. If you find the texture of the skin unpleasant, you can peel them. Alternatively, cut them in half and scoop out the flesh with a spoon, or hold the stem, snap it off, and peel the skin downwards like a banana to enjoy just the inner flesh. After washing, pat the figs dry with a paper towel and slice them into thick pieces.

Step 4

Lightly warm the whole wheat bread in the microwave for about 30 seconds to soften it. Generously spread cream cheese on the bread. Arrange a handful of fresh baby greens on top, followed by the sliced figs. For added flavor, you can mix a little honey or oligosaccharide into the cream cheese, or add chopped nuts. I personally prefer to use plain cream cheese to enjoy its pure taste.

If you prefer a sweeter taste, a drizzle of honey over the open sandwich would be delicious. However, I personally don’t enjoy very sweet flavors, so I opted out of adding extra honey.
