Sweet Korean Melon Jam
Add Sweetness with Homemade Korean Melon Jam!
Nowadays, children often don’t eat Korean melons (chamoe) as much as they used to, perhaps accustomed to a wide variety of sweet treats. To help them enjoy this delicious fruit, I’ve made a sweet Korean melon jam! It’s a wonderful way to introduce the unique flavor of chamoe in a delightful, jam form.
Ingredients- 1 large Korean melon (chamoe)
- 1/4 to 1/5 cup white sugar (using a rice bowl for measurement)
- 1/2 to 1/3 tsp ground cinnamon
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Receiving a box of fresh, delicious Korean melons as a gift is wonderful, but they have a limited shelf life. If your children don’t typically eat them, making them into jam is a fantastic alternative way to enjoy them.
Step 2
Today, I’ll show you how to make a simple Korean melon jam using just one melon and a bit of sugar. This jam is perfect for spreading on toast or enjoying as a sweet snack for kids.
Step 3
First, wash the Korean melon thoroughly. Cut it in half and scoop out the seeds. We’ll only be using the fleshy part of the melon. (Fun fact: my 6-year-old son actually enjoys eating the seeds! 😊)
Step 4
Once the seeds are removed, finely chop the melon flesh. You can use a knife, or for convenience, a food processor or blender works wonderfully.
Step 5
To measure the sugar, I used a standard Korean rice bowl. I’ll provide the sugar quantity based on this measurement for your reference.
Step 6
The chopped melon filled about 1.5 rice bowls. For this amount, I’m using about 1/5 cup of sugar. (Note: After tasting the jam, I felt it could have been a little sweeter, so feel free to adjust the sugar to your preference.)
Step 7
In a pot, combine the chopped melon and sugar. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce to low. Cook until much of the liquid has evaporated and the mixture starts to thicken. Once it reaches a jam-like consistency, lower the heat to the lowest setting and continue to cook slowly, stirring occasionally.
Step 8
When the jam has thickened nicely, stir in the ground cinnamon. The warm spice notes of cinnamon complement the melon’s natural sweetness beautifully, adding an extra layer of flavor.
Step 9
Continue to cook for a few more minutes after adding the cinnamon until the jam reaches your desired consistency. Then, remove from heat and let it cool completely. The jam will thicken further as it cools.
Step 10
This delicious Korean melon jam is wonderful spread on plain toast, crusty baguette, or soft morning rolls. Enjoy the subtle fragrance of the melon combined with a pleasant sweetness that lingers with every bite.
Step 11
Be warned: this jam is incredibly addictive! Even children who might not usually eat plain Korean melon will likely love this jam. Hopefully, by enjoying it this way, they’ll soon start eating fresh Korean melons too! 😊
